United States officials note Argentina may profitably export raw sugar and molasses amid a small crop. Minister Buchanan reports Treuman province had 31 mills producing 240,356,976 pounds of sugar in 1895, up 76,172,288 pounds from 1894.
The Weekly Sentinel notes a full Democratic victory in the city elections with the entire city ticket elected. Mayor Scherer won by a 1336 margin, all Democratic council members at large, and most ward candidates, except one, were elected. only Republican W. M. Glenn of the Sixth Ward remains. New York May 6 progress of a potential general strike by Express Employes follows a porters strike at the Forty-ninth Street depot. A petition and grievances list will be presented to L O Weir, urging reinstatement of porters and shorter hours. If the strike hinges on eight men who quit Saturday, Mr Weir warned, there will be a strike.
Mandate against Haneces county commissioners to set aside contract for two new courthouses built by Geake Henry and Co Fort Wayne. Plaintiff alleges bid was won fairly yet unlawfully rejected and that a pretended contract was made with a Fort Wayne firm. Hearing set for the 11th inst.
Mrs Mary Maryland Pickerell, a Denver resident born in Arkansas, wins a city garbage contract for less than half prior prices. She enforces permits for hog raisers to feed waste, fines violators, and expands her influence from ranches to boarding houses while boasting athletic strength and a tough past as a dancer and actress.
