Joseph Delser accidentally discharged his revolver while showing it to Herman Schmidt in Jaruszy City New Jersey on April 28, killing Schmidt instantly. The short item notes the incident and location with basic details.
MILWAUKEE April 28 Dr Orton accused of abortion upon Nelly O Toole his intended bride was today discharged by Judge Mallory of the criminal court. Orton once a political figure serving on the city council and a mayoral candidate later fell under suspicion of counterfeiting about six years ago and spent time in jail. A big blaze at Wellsville Ohio area destroyed Fowler s livery stable Pan Handle News office residence and tin shop of J N Shornack dwelling and store of Hugh Barth and dwelling and saloon of Robert Thomson The town hall council chamber and market house were badly damaged with losses about 25000 partly insured.
A major blaze struck Fairfield Iowa between midnight and 2 AM destroying much of the south half of the east side of the square. By 8:30 AM the area was a smoldering ruin with losses estimated around 40 000 dollars and partial insurance. The report notes the fire as the greatest in the city’s history with extensive damage.
Jay Gould left New York in a special car with Russell Sage Samuel Sloane and A L Hopkins for a trip west and south. The party will stop at Buffalo and reach Detroit then proceed as far as St. Louis to inspect the southwestern system and segments of the East Tennessee Virginia and Georgia railroad system. They plan to return in a few days.
April 30 report from New Ogreaus describes a northeast to southwest cyclone seven to eight miles north of the town. The fifteen mile track left no buildings or trees standing, blasting gin houses, cabins, barns, and stock. Several families injured or killed, with extensive property damage across many farms and timbered land.
Acquitted. On May 1 Cousain reports cab driver Fitz Harris was found not guilty of being a principal in the Phanix park murders after a trial. The outcome ends the case against him.
Detroit reports a Sunday blaze in New aygo destroying the Booke hotel exchange house two churches and fourteen other buildings. Loss estimated at $60 000. In Syzacuar a fountain explosion fatally injures one and seriously injures two others.
May 3 Psresnzonoves Eng reports a gas explosion in a sewer blew up the principal street causing great damage to surrounding structures and road. Police and fire departments respond as investigators review the scene for cause and safety.
In Ornan e Virginia on April 80 a heavy frost and ice darkened fruit in the north while wheat remained unharmed. No corn had been planted due to cold wet conditions. In Buguinerson May 1 the city council held a special session and refused to reduce the saloon license from 400 to 200 dollars, a move that drew public attention for days.
Albany May 1 Gov Cleveland signed a measure requiring county boards of supervisors to provide burial for deceased soldiers sailors and marines and to place an appropriate headstone. The act aims to end pauper graves for veterans and standardize funeral honors.
In Philadelphia on May 1 the railroad board decided to issue a semi annual dividend of 2 percent in cash 2 percent in a crip or cash at stockholders option and 4 percent in stock. Stockholders may subscribe to new stock at par in proportion to 25 percent of their holdings.
From Sanford Kentucky on May 1 reports say three Smith brothers and Harry Yocum clashed with the three Cain brothers in a McKinney drinking house. Forty shots were fired with William Cain shot in the head, Peter and James Cain seriously wounded, and Robert Smith shot in the mouth.
Waxahachie Texas May 1 A Sunday night fire in this city destroyed five buildings including a grain elevator. Losses listed at 40 000 with 22 500 insured. Incendiary is charged. Yasco Orry Mis May 1 An incendiary fire destroyed the stables on J H Woolfolk s Potasi plantation that night. Thirty five mules burned to death. Maprsurreto Wis May 1 A small lumbering town on the Central Wisconsin railway was visited by a conflagration this morning. Nine houses were burned. Losses 7 000 and fifteen families rendered home less.
Jay Gould and party departed at noon in five official cars aboard a special train. The group, similar to the New York delegation, carried provisions for twenty days and may travel into Mexico via the Luterational road. Gould’s deposition occurred in Nelson vs Missouri Pacific at the request of the plaintiff, with inquiry covering the Poplar Street connected track and other matters. Gould testified for nearly two hours.
A government works report from Muscle Shoals near Florence describes the lynching of George Ware colored who murdered a white boy twelve to steal twelve dollars paid to the boy. After repeated river tosses the mob seized him and hanged him from a depot beam, riddling his body with bullets as the jailer’s wife was moved for safety.
Governor A G Porter of Indiana and state commissioners on public charities toured the insane hospital in Kankakee. He discussed party prospects for 1884 and tariff reductions, praised Senator Logan, and predicted a unified Republican campaign. Porter endorsed the asylum’s hybrid system and noted plans to locate new asylums at Richmond and Logansport.
In Cleveland on May 2 the thirteenth annual Lake Shore railway stockholders meeting elected the directors: Wm. H. Vanderbilt, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Wm. K. Vanderbilt, Augustus Schell, Samuel F. Barger, John E. Barrell, Darius O. Mills, Edward D. Worcester, John Newell, Wm. L. Scott, Chas. M. Reed, Rosselas Brown, and J. H. Wade. President Vanderbilt reported earnings of 18.225 million with 7 percent net growth and an 8 percent dividend. operating expenses at 60 percent, debt changes included a first mortgage at 22 million and a second mortgage increase to 21.192 million via bonds exchanged for large stock stakes. total funded debt stood at 48.192 million. Directors to meet after the vote to elect officers.
Miss Anna Travers was attacked by two men while walking at night in Bactimone Md. They felled her with a stone, cut her throat and robbed her. Found on a vacant lot, she was taken home and is not expected to survive. She is the daughter of former Dorchester County legislator William K Travers.
Advices from the Indian Territory report John A. Neal of Boston murdered on the Kansas City Cattle company rancho. He lived in a dug out with two cattle herders for health. Neale was beheaded with a hatchet and robbed of 250 dollars, a watch, and valuables. No clue to killers.
The grand jury returned multiple true bills for murder and conspiracy including against Peter Tynan John Walsh and P J Sheridan. Walsh and Sheridan are in America and extradition is sought. A May report notes rumor the U S government may extradite Tynan Walsh and Sheridan.
A dispatch from Vickaburg Mississippi reports a blast at the registral works one mile below Quicago. Minnie Nesvender died instantly and Tillie and Henry Parks were fatally injured. Watchman Donnelly and laborer Andy Green sustained serious injuries. cause of the explosion is not stated.
A morning fire at Bailey's Harbor Wisconsin destroyed William Jacksons residence and caused the death of his wife and her daughters Olive and Bertha aged seven and twelve who perished upstairs. The blacksmith shop of F Wahiton also burned along with both structures valued at $1,000 with no insurance.
John O Callahan challenged his brother in law Michael Nealin to a pistol duel over alleged slanders. They met on Decatur street at fifteen paces. Nealin was wounded and hospitalized. Both men taken into custody.
Charlea Tyler, injured in the Keystone colliery blast Monday, died last night becoming the fourth casualty. He leaves a wife and six children in poor circumstances.
Cairo May 3 reports Colonel Hicks clashed with 8,000 rebels on April 29. The stand lasted about thirty minutes and General El Mahdi and 5,000 followers were killed, with Egyptian losses totaling eight. Also, the steamer Fanny Freese sank near Mapisoy Indiana on April 3.
Bradlaugh again refused persuasion to take his seat in the house of commons as no passes are issued. Albany reports a bill to prohibit free passes beyond railroad employes passing the assembly. Commercial Report notes business failures for the last seven days as per R G Dun and Co, issue 162 versus 182 last week.
Feel Quite Safe New York May 4 Patrick J Sheridan and John Walsh indicted by the Dublin grand jury for murder remain unmolested and say they will not evade officers and are not alarmed.
May 4 report from Terns Haute says the corner stone of the colored Methodist church was pulled from the building at night and 5 in coin and scrip and other contents were taken. Delaney and Caffrey pled guilty in Dusny on May 2 to participating in the Cavendish and Burke murders and were sentenced to be hanged June 2.
Fort Worth report says Major Wesson, army paymaster, lost his valise with $24,000 in currency while in a sleeper car on the Texas and Pacific near Sweet Water Sunday. He was en route to Fort Bliss, currently in Colorado City with only a vague account.
The Scott liquor tax bill challenge reached the supreme court on April 3 as the attorney general sought a mandamus to force Athens county auditor Franes to publish notice per the bill. Writ granted by consent, return May 10, answer May 26, with jurists and attorneys named for both sides.
Mack Marsden is arrested in Huttsborne Missouri for the murder of Anson A. Vail after Vail perished in a house fire in 1881. Polk, ex state treasurer, faces arrest and flight concerns in Nashville. In Dublin on May 4 Lawrence Hanlon was found guilty of attempting to murder juror Dennis Field and sentenced to life penal servitude. Fitzharris, indicted yesterday as an accessory to the Cavendish and Burke murder, pleaded not guilty. Hawkins, earlier said to face conspiracy charges with Kingston and others, has been discharged.
In the Indian Territory near Darlington on Wednesday, a posse of Texas farmers fought three horse thieves. Fleming was killed, another was mortally wounded, and the third captured. The dead outlaw lay on the prairie. the surviving two were returned to Texas with the stolen horses.
New York on May 4 a policeman Frances Mallon was shot and killed by Michael Sullivan a plumber after being ordered to move on. The first shot proved fatal and Sullivan then fired again while Mallon lay down. Sullivan was arrested.
New York on May 4 reports that Hussys and Boyds ran private letter express services, failing to deliver mail regularly. Postal officers raided them and found about 40 000 private letters and circulars. Arrests are expected. In Missouri a Lebanon dispatch says at Ball's Mills twelve miles from here a drunken quarrel led to Tennessee Jones being fatally stabbed by Dr J H Ball.
An explosion of gas in the Dorrance shaft of the Lehigh Valley company at Wilkesbarre Pa has trapped several men. The fire department is fully engaged and serious danger is feared as rescue efforts unfold.
A Cincinnati Enquirer reader reports on summer hair trends with straight bangs and curly locks requiring curling irons, pastiches, or velvet nets. It notes bride coiffures with braided fronts and orange wreaths, uses vari colored powders, and warns of women adopting wigs to change hair color.
Henry H. Noble of Mansfield has been cured of arterial ossification in his legs and feet after amputation above the ankle leaving him with one foot missing yet able to move. Jasac Brewington hunted in the Bull Mountains in February when he encountered two nearly grown mountain lions. He shot and killed the cubs, then fired on the mother, finally escaping as she pursued. Boad Harris recalls with Col DuPree spotting a giant gourd vine in Bartow County. The vine spread over an acre, emerged from the ground as large as Harris, and he estimates a five mile direct length. They counted gourds beyond 400 before nightfall and stopped counting.
Governor Madero of Cosmila, Mexico sold 500 leagues of state land between Eagle Pass and the state upper boundary to a gentleman named Kirtland representing a wealthy English syndicate. He paid ten cents per acre totaling $222,200 for ranch development. The council included seventeen Democrats and one Republican. Mr. Michael is described as feeling lonesome.
