Longtime editor and teacher Ch Spalding dies after a twelve year illness. Born in Bardstown Kentucky to a planter family, he pursued schooling and academy study before entering accounting. A period as a traveling salesman preceded his rise in journalism with the Sentinel.
Fort Wayne and Allen county teachers will travel to South Bend for the Northern Indiana Teachers’ Association annual meeting on a special train. About 300 educators are expected. the event lasts three days with schools adjourned for a short vacation. Fort Wayne high school teachers may skip this event due to attendance at a recent Indianapolis meeting.
Engineers working on the Powder River Wayne and Chicago Barge Canal near completion plan to depart by early date. Captain H. Watkins informs that nonessential staff will leave as the army board nears final decision. Major Bond and Malcolm Ry Sutherland prepare the commercial canal report for Army review.
The body of Chares Hosny, noted photographer for The Lone Sentinel, was laid to rest Friday afternoon in Lindenwood. Funeral services were held at 966 Columbia Avenue, with ministers from Westminster Presbyterian church officiating. Floral tributes were abundant. attendees included local friends and community members.
Grace Tucker of Webb City Missouri was divorced from Crace Tucker and, under her maiden name Grace Tucker restored, married Wille Shadwick the next day. The couple had been forced into the first marriage by relatives, ending in a divorce after two years.
Marmon Wertman a 52 year old Cedar Creek township farmer north east of Fort Wayne used a pistol to kill himself on the highway near his son’s farm after telling him he was “going away.” The body was found twenty minutes later by his son. Coroner’s office notified. Wertman had shown peculiar behavior recently. He left a widow and two children.
The Fort Wayne Anti Tuberculosis Society plans to issue its own seals next fall rather than use state seals and split proceeds. Officials dispute the 25 percent share, seeking lower rates, with $268 sent to Indianapolis and $2,000 to Fort Wayne treasury last campaign. Mr Van Barken of the national society visits Fort Wayne and aims to organize more local societies across Indiana.

Automobiles valued at 354 and livestock values given. 75 percent of these valuations are assessed.
Lieutenant James D. Willson has been assigned as commander of the government repair ship Fulton, launched at Boston and en route to Newport News for completion. After provisioning in New York it will sail to Pensacola to join the practicing submarine fleet. Mrs Willson and their baby will stay with her parents in Fort Wayne.
Fort Wayne officials vow to fight a complaint by Fort Wayne and Northern Indiana Traction with the Indiana public utilities commission. Mayor Hosey says the city light and power department faces unfair competition claims but will test the utilities law in court if needed.
The city reports a four year extension starting Jan 1 1915 with no encroachment by railroad buildings on Clinton Street opening across tracks. A prior two year term expired Jan 1. a condemned depot grounds bill failed in the legislature, but officials expect a future agreement or new law to allow the opening after four years.
An agricultural extension team from Purdue University announced a March 22 to 27 dairy feeding lecture series on a special train. Stops include Colburn Burrows Lewisburg and more with night meetings in Wabash Bluffton Andrews Roanoke and Yoder. Topics cover Feeding Dairy Cattle Calf Feeding and milk substitute issues. The run covers Fort Wayne and Northern Indiana Marion and Bhaffton Indiana Railway and Light Company Union Traction Company and Terre Haute Indianapolis and Eastern lines.
A new Citizens Oil company organized by Fort Wayne and Louisville business men lists Ernest Kampe as director. Fort Wayne stockholders include J. A. Kiett W. B. Lett E G Kampe and many others. The firm owns 736 acres with seven producing wells and six being drilled south of St Francisville. Some stockholders will visit wells next week with engineer M W Howe.
Fort Wayne bakers say bread will stay at 10 cents for several weeks as flour remains high and wheat prices do not fall. They note a price drop in New York prompted rumors but attribute it to a baker's dispute there. Local bakers will cut prices only when flour costs justify it.
Fort Wayne officials met in the board of works office to begin flood prevention under a new Allen county law. The joint city and county committee, led by Mayor Hosey and County Commissioners, planned forming a flood district and rapid implementation of county measures under the act.
Theodore Wentz, cashier of the Gumman-American National bath, rushed from Canal Dover Ohio after a telegram announced his mother in Elkhart Indiana was seriously ill. She died before he arrived. The body will be taken to Canal Dover for burial following a period of ill health after the death of his father two months earlier.
The Woodburn school in Maumee township is described as the nearest model for consolidation in Allen county. It is modern and serves pupils from miles around, with graduates able to enter many colleges. Washington township advisory members, planning a consolidated school to replace the Scarlett building destroyed by fire, visited Woodburn for ideas.
