Canadians' perilous ice crossing near Ottawa City

Eight Canadians started yesterday toward the city on a heavily loaded sleigh drawn by horses. The ice broke near Ottawa Bay as they neared Ottawa City, plunging the party into frigid water. They and nearby drivers aided each other, saving the horses valued at $800, though the sleigh and goods sank. The rooky ice near the breach is thin, four to five inches, with deep grooves from currents. The party reached Peninsula to dry and care for exhausted animals.
