A robbery attempt at a Woodburn saloon ends with night marshal Columbus Croy dead and three burglars fleeing. A sledge hammer stolen from a nearby shop and a discarded revolver shell indicate a planned safe blow. Neighbors rally funds and vigilance committees as authorities seek the suspects.
Sheriff Grice returned to Fort Wayne Saturday noon with no clue to the identity of the burglars who killed Marshal Columbus Croy in Woodburn yesterday morning after a bloodhound search that followed the supposed route of the criminals all night.
Fred C. Boltz of Fort Wayne was found guilty in a federal court in Indianapolis on three counts of receiving stolen postage stamps and was sentenced to three years in prison with hard labor at Fort Leavenworth and fined $100. The jury acquitted one count. Judge Anderson criticized Boltz, saying the testimony showed repeated offenses and noting Boltz perjured himself on the stand. Boltz, 59, will likely be taken to Fort Leavenworth to begin term.
Postoffice Inspector A R Burr, who led the case against Boltz, returned after learning the jury verdict and penalty by telegram. He called the verdict just and said it vindicates government actions. Burr plans to travel to Washington and eastern points and may return to the northwest after year end. Boltz was arrested in Fort Wayne on September 17 last.
Greenwich England June 11 Charles Dalton an American writer from Indianapolis attempted to cut his throat with a razor due to financial troubles. He was taken to a hospital and likely will recover.
Charles Test Dalton son of Nathan F. Dalton a lumber merchant of Indianapolis. He lived in New York for two years before a year abroad. Born in Vincennes he was a literary worker here and with the Indianapolis Sentinel and Journal. He wrote The Role of the Unconquered under the name Test Dalton. Parents reside at 237 East Pratt Street.
Cincinnati, June 11. The inheritance of 4500 dollars sparked quarrels and a murder and death by own action in an apartment on Burns alley. Mrs. Howard Baumgartner lay dead from a bullet to the left temple while her husband lay unconscious with a similar wound to the right temple. The husband died a few hours later. It is unknown who fired the shots. The husband recently inherited a fourth interest in an 18000 dollar estate, and disputes over the money are blamed for the violence.
Harry Orchard, the state's star witness in the Haywood murder case, testifies for six days with a detailed confession to numerous killings. He links Moyer and Haywood to crimes across the West and recounts plots against prominent officials, including Governor Steunenberg. The defense struggles to shake his testimony as he maintains calm, precise testimony and attributes his actions to a recent religious turn.
On June 5 in Boise Idaho William Haywood's murder trial began with Henry Orchard taking the stand. Orchard recounted his role in blowing up the Wardner concentrator mill killing two men and implicated Haywood as the target of the conspiracy while the defense objections were overruled.
Harry Orchard testified that William D Haywood first suggested he come to Idaho to kill Frank Steunenberg. Orchard recalled a 1905 Denver conference at the Western Federation of Miners office where Moyer opposed further violence and urged outside work.

Five midshipmen and an officer from the battleship Minnesota and five seamen are missing after a launch from the Minne sota went down near Hampton Roads. The missing include Lieutenant Randall and Midshipmen Field Ulrich Holden Stevenson Holcomb. The launch landed at the exposition grounds after midnight and was believed to have struck an object and sunk with loss of all aboard.
