A report claims Tsung Ah Jan a Mott Street grocer is afflicted with leprosy and being hidden by friends. Police investigate the Chinese quarter for confirmation amid ongoing crime notes from Dory Orry to Burris and Burrattzo to Chicago.
A massive blast at King's powder mills on the Lattle Miami railroad east of Cincinnati killed twelve people and injured many more. A car with 500 kegs and a following car with 800 kegs of gunpowder detonated, destroying tracks and flooding surrounding bottoms. Rescue began as telegraph lines failed and the death toll rose with dozens injured and many bodies recovered or identified. Names of the dead and injured include Mrs. James Deacons, Harry Reynolds, Samuel Stephens, Mrs. Jas. Moss, Wm. Franey, and brakeman Ralph ms, among others. victims span Cincinnati and nearby towns.
In Goreville Illinois a 16 year old boy burglarizing the Sullivan home fatally shoots farmer Morris Sullivan and his wife after being challenged. Neighbors capture him. he had previously tried to poison them with strychnine and shows no remorse.
The Southern Colored Republican Association led by H. J. Europe of Alabama sent a petition to Senate Republicans urging passage of the federal election bill to ensure free and fair elections in the south. They contend the best government is republican, and the worst is disfranchised citizenship in a republic. The petition says they seek no white domination but equal participation as citizens in southern government.
Judge Tuley issues decision supporting Chicago and Western Indiana claim that the Canadian Pacific railroad will gain access to Chicago. The ruling concerns the Wabash road plans to use Western Indiana tracks from Chicago to Hammond and whether that would interfere with Western Indiana operations.
The World's Washington correspondent reports growing crisis between Mr. Blaine and President Harrison. Blaine plans to resign, citing clashes over diplomatic appointments, Behring Sea negotiations, and the McKinley tariff. The dispatch warns of a heavy fireworks display upon his departure.
B N McCullough of Pennsylvania company returns to Pittsburgh from the West amid talks of a deal that ousted the Vanderbilts to control Union stock yards Chicago. McCullough declines details while other officials confirm the deal and plan him as president of a reorganized company with a $15 million capital.
Frightful boiler explosion at Cassiday and Adler iron foundry in New York this afternoon around two o clock causes widespread destruction. Injured numbers are unknown, with twelve taken to Roosevelt Hospital and others to Bellevue and New York Hospital.
The house committee on claims reported favorable on a senate bill to credit Major Daniel N. Bash of the U S army with 7350 for government funds robbed from him at Antelope Springs Wyoming in March 1887 while en route to Fort McKinley to pay troops.
In Anderson Indiana near Enid two men died after a gas pocket released as Louis Pippin dug a well. His son in law Davis Walker was lowered into the shaft and suffocated. Both bodies recovered two hours later.

Prohibition party keeps D D Kelley as gubernatorial nominee, will canvass. Freeront farmers nominate Andrew Ashton for Congress.
A fire at 7 am gutted the Western Union Telegraph Building in New York. Seven people were rescued from the roof as flames ate through the sixth to ninth floors, destroying the operating and battery rooms, restaurant, and immense telegraph equipment. No insurance coverage is reported and the loss is put near a quarter of a million dollars with extensive equipment and records lost.
July 17 report from Lake Orry Miaun details one body recovered at Lake Pepin a little girl named Rosie Kahder. The Red Wing mayor releases an official list showing all previously reported missing victims found so far.
The death count reaches 120 as search efforts end. Inspectors Yegger and Knapp conduct an investigation at the disaster site today.
Washington July 18 The House committee on invalid pensions approved a favorable report on a bill granting a $2,000 yearly pension to the widow of General Fremont. The elections committee decided two of four remaining contested cases along party lines in favor of Republican contestants Goodrich vs Bullock in Florida and McGinnis vs Alderson in West Virginia.
About 200 Diamond Plate Glass company employees in Koromo Indiana failed to appear, demanding noon close for the week instead of 4 p m Saturday. Superintendent Elliott refused but workers left at noon. Management has not issued a definite reply. In Illinois a Chicago and Alton railroad disruption seen as conductors discharged with sixteen let go after grievance committee meeting and no objection from the committee.
Washington July 19 The general deficiency appropriation bill for the last fiscal year and prior years was reported in the house by Mr Henderson Iowa The bill totals 5 140 440 based on an estimate of about 23 050 000 It includes 71 081 for election case expenses and various widow claims including Mrs Randall 4500 Mrs Townshend 10691 Mrs Gay 9990 Mrs Cox 796 and Mrs Kelley 6225.
Two Gloucester fishermen from the schooner Lizzie W. Hannon report they were ashore at Gash harbor when the Canadian cruiser Stanley chased the vessel. The schooner was seen seven to eight miles ahead of the cruiser and seemed likely to escape. The pair walked to Campbellton and were sent to St John by the U.S. consul, who will arrange their return home.
Mrs. Lillie Walker, a divorced woman from Tennessee, was arrested in Henrysville while dressed in a male outfit trying to steal a ride on a freight train to Indianapolis. She says she has friends in Illinois and ran away from an abusive husband. She faces reformatory detention.

Six large steamships departed New York today bound for Europe crowded to capacity. Among them Dr. L. J. Montgomery of Chicago and about twenty doctors from various cities set sail to attend the Berlin medical congress.
Thomas Farquhar and his three children were struck by a train near West Bergen New Jersey after Farquhar hurled the children down an embankment to save them. He perished attempting to save himself. Also reported Fred B Cliff of Rochester drowned while bathing near Silver Lake New York after cramps struck him. recovery of his body pending.
The national silver committee plans a vigorous canvass to win control of the next House in favor of free coinage. It has purchased thousands of speeches and will present a printed report on September 1 detailing work, legislation progress, and votes on the silver bill and amendments.

A Mail Pouch with letters was found in a vault in an old house on Hamilton street yesterday. The stash includes letters bearing Decatur Ind and other destinations, dated November 3 and 4 1889. Postmaster Higgins took possession. many letters remain, suggesting a hurried, frightened thieves’ escape. Some letters may contain money and checks.
Hundreds came to the feeble minded home last Sunday thinking it open for visitors. In the evening a large crowd swarmed the grounds damaging flowers and disturbing residents. Superintendent Blake asked the paper to print clearly that the institution is not open to visitors yet.

In Van Wert Ohio on July 22 Fireman Samuel Roadhouse confessed to killing engineer Madison Vandevander aboard a locomotive after a quarrel and threats. He described bludgeoning Vandevander with a hammer and attempting to cover up the act, was moved to the county jail amid crowd talk of lynching. The incident followed Vandevander’s funeral conducted by the Mascons and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Wendall Strope a longtime city engineer was killed Sunday on the New Albany Salem and Chicago line while performing his duty. The derailed engine struck a cattle guard after a cow caused the derailment. Strope, engineer of No. 209 on the Fort Wayne road, was a nephew of D B Strope whose family moved to Ontario California.
M. S. Wickliffe and wife will relocate to Chicago to establish a permanent home. They will vacate and lease the Oliver House to a farmers' hotel, promising no saloon on the premises if the bridge is placed at Columbia Street. Wickliffe also intends to rejoin the Thiele railroad detective agency in Chicago.
John Burns a farmer on Huntington road was thrown from a high hay load when his team ran away. He suffered severe injuries and was carried home insensible as bystanders put the load and horses right.
