Cannon Explains His Appointees In Tariff Conferees

Washington July 10. All conferees on the tariff bill met at 10 this morning for the first session. Work was divided so sub-conferees handle the most vexing questions while Ways and Means and Finance committee members handle other subjects. Cannon said the seating sought geographic balance among conferees with three Republicans to the eastern states three to the middle west and three Democrats to the south. The White House again becomes a focus as Taft aims to shape the measure into acceptable form and cabinet appointments. Senators Lodge Taylor and Frazier urged free hides and census supervisor appointments from the south as Taft plans to nominate the best available men regardless of party.
