In a chaotic kitchen tale Amanda cannot pull the dinner from the dumb waiter. The Peterkin family descends to the kitchen, plans a solution, and the carpenter retrieves the meal after a late rescue. The story ends with the roast turkey served and the family eating together.
A well dressed man around 28 uses a loaded tale to prey on merchants. He claims his brother died and his body is on ice in Philadelphia after a forged telegram. He asks the merchant to advance funds after bank hours to cover the freight and burial costs.
A smooth talker urges trips and funds for a Philadelphia return claiming a needed sum of about ten dollars. He has previously succeeded several times, then vanishes with the cash, leaving a brother’s corpse “on ice” and the donor high and dry. He tried the scam again at the Lovejoy in Park Row but was thwarted and fled.
A Saturday melee in Jacksonport ends with Mayor Brian and Marshal Tatmon arrested after a flare of gunfire. George and Charles Tatmon flee, surrender hours later, and a jurist is jailed as a tense crowd packs the streets.
At Ashton Crossing Iowa an auction ended in a violent feud after two bidders made the same bid. A son of one bidder seized the rival and fired hitting him near the neck. The rival responded with a shot to the attacker. A second son intervened as the wounded man fled and was attacked. Police arrested all involved though the first assailant was later released.
A Brooklyn judge hears a divorce suit filed by Gertrude A. Thompson claiming she was married to Sterling S. Smith, son of a Columbia Heights millionaire. She seeks custody of her husband from Smith Sr., who allegedly had him confined in a lunatic asylum. The husband left after a dispute over the marriage. Smith Sr. denies the couple’s claims.
The Jewish Messenger notes a new society offering portionless orphans a chance at marriage with a $1,000 dowry for the lucky husband and the donor. It compares to European models that pay $1,000 to widows and kin on a member’s death, arguing for similar popularity and a cheerful goal.
