Three large explosions shattered the gunpowder works at Maiden on January 19, unroofing most local houses and damaging nearby towns. The death toll is unknown with about forty feared dead as windows shattered eight miles away.

Tragic Loss Of Families In Cimbria Disaster

The Bartelstein family from Cleveland perished when the steamship Cimbria sank in the North Sea. Solomon Bartelstein had moved from Russian Poland two years ago and sent for his wife and four children last May. The eldest daughter, twenty one, fainted upon hearing the news and is not expected to recover. Also lost were Joseph Henby and his son Joseph Ponec with their families from Cracow en route to Cleveland.

Murder at Walker County Farmhouse Sparks Suspicions

In Onattancoca Tennessee on January 24 a 75 year old farmer HH H Rudd was found slain with an axe wound in the doorway.
