Three large explosions shattered the gunpowder works at Maiden on January 19, unroofing most local houses and damaging nearby towns. The death toll is unknown with about forty feared dead as windows shattered eight miles away.
A Spokane Falls dispatch reports a fire in T. R. Moore’s store and four nearby business buildings in San Francisco last evening, with total damage estimated at $60,000. Other items note market jitters in Paris after a manifesto, a grim crime in Milwaukee, a Panama reward, and New Year bullfights.
Chicago reports an industrial stove explosion kills domestic Oelia Goetze after frozen pipes caused steam pressure to rupture a kitchen range. San Francisco notes 26 bodies recovered from Berkeley area gunpowder explosion ruins. Teentor and Hamsunra cover US Senate vote for McPherson and Cimbria shipwrecks with unconfirmed casualties. The Bartelstein family from Cleveland perished when the steamship Cimbria sank in the North Sea. Solomon Bartelstein had moved from Russian Poland two years ago and sent for his wife and four children last May. The eldest daughter, twenty one, fainted upon hearing the news and is not expected to recover. Also lost were Joseph Henby and his son Joseph Ponec with their families from Cracow en route to Cleveland.
In Onattancoca Tennessee on January 24 a 75 year old farmer HH H Rudd was found slain with an axe wound in the doorway. Local reports suggest two negro men seen nearby may be suspects though no clue has emerged. Nearby a separate dispatch from Cincinnati notes a Keyser West Virginia railroad accident with multiple injuries and fatalities among Cumberland workers.
News from Brisbane reports a large three masted schooner wrecked at the Fly River mouth New Guinea. Seventeen crewmen were killed by natives whose heads were distributed to villages. Nearby Cincinnati and Newport incidents involve a fatal shooting and a burglary misunderstanding.
