Portland City Hall Fire Wrecks Buildings In 700 Plus Danger
A fire in Portland Maine damaged city and county offices including city hall and the police building causing an estimated 1.6 million in losses. Over 700 people attended a jubilee in the hall when flames broke out but only one serious injury was recorded. The blaze started in the city electrician’s office from crossed wires and led to the escape of prisoners from the city jail. The incident echoed the 1866 conflagration as one of Maine’s worst fires. Chief Engineer Melville Eldridge directed firefighting amid injuries from a hose coupling.
