James Raymond died at 18 Gold street Brooklyn at 6 AM after hydrophobia from a cat bite six months earlier. He developed breathing obstruction and convulsions, was treated with chloroform and morphine, and died after prolonged illness. An Episcopal minister administered last rites as he begged to avoid further agony. He left a wife and young child at age 22.
A Wisconsin paper reports a charitable lottery that paired eleven widows with eleven of twelve local widowers. A Benevolent Society committee organized the drawing at 5 p.m. on Monday the 7th, selecting pairs such as Mr. Manten with Mrs. De Bruin and Mr. Menten with Mrs. Vink.
