New York January 24 Daniel S Lamont denied reports that President Cleveland interfered in senatorial contests to advance friends He said Cleveland’s attitude was misunderstood and that anti Cleveland forces pressured him for a political stance in the upper state while denying the charges.
A morning fire at the Morpeth residence of Lady Orde, dowager of Sir John Pow, trapped her and servants on the upper floors. Firemen used a lift and rope rescue to bring them to safety as the home burned, with valuables and family heirlooms lost. No casualties reported.
In Corry Indiana a Monday night saloon melee erupted as Missouri cowboys bar room contested drinks and refused payment. Revolvers and beer glasses flew as over fifteen fought. six men suffered serious injuries likely fatally. The incident ended only after hours of fighting.
A gas bureau worker, among several accused of extensive check issuance speculation, was proven innocent but never recovered from the humiliation and died from a broken heart.
Nora Bett twenty six shot her sweetheart Edward Smith twenty one during a New Years celebration at Eugene Courter home. After they vanished two shots fired outside the house left both dead with Nora clutching a revolver, suspected to have killed Smith then herself amid a quarrel.
Elder John Stuart from Salt Lake City arrives with twenty families about 100 people to form a Mormon colony in Mexico. The large settlement expected to reach 3,000 members will be allowed to practice their religion as they see fit. The report comes from Santa Eulalia, Mex. January 4.
Syracuse telegram reports D. Edgar Crouse heirs offered Mrs. Kosterlitz one million dollars to settle her claims as widow and potential heiress to a estate valued at over three million dollars. New York January 4 A protest circular is being prepared by archdiocese priests including Fathers Corrigan Burtsell Laughlin McSweeney Cody Holland Malone Sheppard and McNulty against criticism of Mgr Satolli's mission. It claims prelates are behind the attacks and argues American allegiance and customs should prevail over foreign practices.
Figaro correspondent asked Russian generals Komeroff and Tchernaieff about the Panama affair and its impact on Franco Russian ties. Both officers said it would not harm France Russia friendship. They added that a war with Germany would be the most popular of all wars.
A serious blast struck the smoking compartment of a Rock Island sleeping car near Des Moines. Passengers including Fred Leischer Senator W. O. Schmidt J J Richardson and William Stackhouse suffered scalds and burns as a steampipe burst trapping them inside. Leischer and Schmidt were seriously burned while Richardson and Stackhouse were badly burned but continued travel.
The report from St Paul says Henry Villard has left the Northern Pacific and will be replaced by ex Governor W Merriam. The move is seen as evidence one Cleveland cabinet post is filled though Villard declines to confirm.
Paivapecena January report claims ex Bank of America president Louis Pfeffer obtained pardon and says Geo W Marsh of Keystone Bank is in South America with Captain Hines of Homestead fame sent to arrest him. Pinkerton Supt Taylor doubts the claim, noting no official word and Hines’ unclear assignment.
