Peruvian Warship Uncas engaged by Chilean launches
In Lima on December 29 a Peruvian launch Uicas on guard in the bay fought three Chilean torpedo launches using forty pounder and mitrailleuse. The Uncas resisted but retreated near shore batteries. Three Chilean launches joined, the Uncas likely struck. three sailors killed and two wounded aboard the Uncas. The Uncas and other vessels faced near misses from shore batteries during a two hour engagement. Nearby ships Huscar, Agamas, and Chiccabuzo supported, while the Lackawan and Big Garibaldi barely escaped heavy shellfire. The Philadelphia area reported Western Union and Pennsylvania RR legal actions over wire rights between Philadelphia and New York.
