New Year report shows loans up 2,680,800 dollars while specie rises 1,292,400 and deposits add 2,436,600. Circulation gains 104,000 with revenue down 807,750. Banks hold 5,272,175 over legal requirements. Also, in Constantinople on December 28, Russian force along Kara frontier tallies 70,000 with eighty guns. Beatin notes German railways to the Russian frontier nearing completion.
The December 28 Peace trial sentenced one prisoner, a disciple of Herr Must, to two years in prison. Forty four others received terms from six months to a fortnight. The remaining five were acquitted.
In Chicago Dec 23 an elderly man found near Monroe Street was linked by letters from prominent public men to a murder related to D. & Cox of Washington and a former Ohio politician. The body suggested foul play and the victim was cast into the river at the foot of Monroe Street this morning. In San Francisco on Dec 37 Jem Mace says he came at Mr Fox’s urging to face Sullivan and has brought a half-breed named Slade to fight.
St Peterspune reports a modus vivendi between Busaia and the pope leading to the pope re appointing Catholic bishops in Poland. ME notes England proposes a diplomatic resident at the Vatican on par with its Prussia envoy and the pope agrees.
In New York on December 2, after months of talks the Western Union Telegraph Company and the Associated Press reached a satisfactory agreement. The ten year contract was executed today with W U officers and an AP committee including Dana Reid Nordhoff Smith and Haldeman.
FareField Me Dec 27 report: the Somerset Fibre main building burned and a massive digestor exploded, sending the machine fragments everywhere. One person, John Poaler, was killed amid the blaze. The plant, recently rebuilt, suffered about 55 000 dollars in losses, insured.

In Beverly West Virginia on December 20 A Curresce a leading Randolph county farmer and four of his children were burned to death while his wife Mrs Currence was fatally injured. He had slept at home while his wife and two children tended a neighbor and the flames enveloped the house destroying all five. Neighbors recovered charred remains as Mrs Currence fought to rescue them.
This morning a tall chimney fell onto a building housing operatives in Beaprorp England. Many workers are believed killed. Twenty two have been removed from the wreckage and two are confirmed dead. Rescue efforts continue.
Jefferson Ohio December 28 The Second National bank has entered voluntary liquidation with 60000 dollars missing. The cashier F Fuller absconded and had his notes deposited to cover the loss. Assistant cashier A I Sr John implicated in the stock speculation scheme in New York as Fuller's accomplice.
A ceaseless rainstorm floods Cologne as the Rhine rises ninety centimetres overnight. The river floods Frankfort on the Main and Neckar level at Mannheim prompts firemen and soldiers to stand by to resist the crowd.
