Fire devastates South Side Bethlehem church and Horticultural Hall
A large fire in Philadelphia's South Side Bethlehem area spread from the Broad and Prince streets church to Horticultural Hall. Within hours the church and hall were engulfed, front walls damaged, and several adjacent buildings flooded by water with losses estimated around 310,000. Other structures on Spruce Street suffered water damage and interior ruin, while two boarding houses faced severe harm. By 9 40 this morning the blaze was under control. Also noted, Weil Kahn & Co., organ makers, filed an assignment with liabilities between 150,000 and 200,000 and assets around 160,000, largely owed to New York and New Orleans creditors.
