Forty Year Old Canal Petition Recalls Fort Wayne History
The piece recalls Lucian P. Stapleford signing a 1867 petition urging Congress to study a Lake Michigan to Lake Erie waterway via Fort Wayne and the Maumee River. Jesse L. Williams led the effort, then hindered by postwar finances, though the idea was long seen as feasible and commercially important. Also noted is a Berry and Calhoun streets deed from 1825 showing a $37.40 sale, witnessed by John Forsythe and Chaunceau Carter, to Benjamin Archer Jr. The deed, yellowed yet legible, will be framed by Vice President C. B. E. Bond.
