Auburn August 6 1890 William Kemmler undergoes the first electric chair execution. The scene in the prison chamber is described with scientific detail the gruesome sight leaving witnesses unsettled and sparking debate over the cruelty and permanence of this method.
The annual meeting will be held in Napoleon on August 20 with Gen. Hayes and Judge Joseph Cox attending. Cox arrives the 17th and will tour forts and battle sites. a grand reception awaits on the 19th. The business session is on the 20th, followed by grove exercises and hopes for funding monuments.
General Ezeta signals desire for peace to avoid more bloodshed as Guatemala City mediates with the foreign diplomatic corps. Guatemala reportedly accepts US Minister Misner mediation to secure peace, a move viewed by some as evidence of Guatemala’s weakness amid the Salvadoran conflict.

In Washington and other townships delegates debated political strategy at a fusion meeting last Saturday. Grangers in Washington township held a rousing stance against sending delegates to the September 11 event, denouncing the policy and endorsing nonparticipation.
Ixptanarous Aug 12 Chairman Michener of the Republican state committee releases an interview outlining campaign issues for the fall. He notes thousands of independent voters likely to support Republicans and cites the disability pension bill the McKinley bill state debt and office increases as key topics. He pledges nonpartisanship for benevolent institutions and promises redistricting if Republicans control the legislature addressing the Democratic gerry mander claim.
August 12 Jouret Illinois A furnace leak at the Illinois steel works triggered molten metal flow into the canal producing steam and a massive blast. John Novak and Oscar Sobweski were blown to death and their bodies not recovered. Peter Schrier died after severe burns. Tim McCarthy survived only briefly with burns and several others suffered minor injuries.
In Bourfton Indiana on August 12 trustees of a defunct Knights of Labor lodge filed a replevin suit to recover the lodge charter and seal from W P McMahon who has been running the order as a political group. When served the writ McMahon grew loud and boisterous, was arrested, and is held in jail. The dispute stirs hostility within the Knights of Labor and appears ongoing.
In Lima Ohio on August 12 a sixteen year old, John Diltz, attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest. The bullet passed through and lodged in a wall. He survives but is expected not to live, with parents in Indiana and a history of rough treatment by the Middaugh family.
In a special session the County Commissioners let contracts for six bridges in Monroe Jackson Jefferson Madison and Lafayette townships. Substructures will be stone or iron with wrought iron superstructures. Bids from King Cleveland Milwaukee Smith Variety Canton Indiana varied from 3 900 to 5 595 and total project cost around 15000 dollars.

At Jeffersonville Indiana a rare Jewish divorce was granted in a county jail office. Rabbi J Finglestein of Cincinnati assisted by M Isenberg of Louisville conducted an orthodox ceremony where a Hebrew document was cut in half and given to each spouse sealing the split of marriage. Only six rabbis in the country can perform this rite.
At 9 30 this morning a loaded elevator on the second floor of the Olds wagon works broke a cable and plunged to the basement injuring four men Albert Null John Lillie Jacob Trimble and Frank Bernard. Null had breast injuries and a chin gash Bernard suffered back and leg injuries. All were stunned. another worker Tanae Osenbaugh also fell and was detained from work.
