Also notes John A Cockerill, famed journalist, born 1845 in Adams County Ohio, rising to edit major papers and shaping the New York World.
Detective Green had watched the post office under orders to arrest William Lee who would call for a letter. When Lee opened and swallowed the letter to destroy evidence, authorities failed to secure the crucial document.

In Invianavoris on July 31 Andrew Ishmel said his wife was missing. A hospital message claimed she died at Dickson toll gate but later proved false. A Cumberland contact said she was found on the National road five miles east of the city, but this also proved incorrect. Mrs Ishmel remains missing.
Washington July 30 The executive committee of the Republican National Committee accepted the resignation of Senator Quay as chairman and General Dudley as treasurer. Mr Clarkson will not serve as chairman until a meeting to elect a successor to Senator Quay can be held.
New York aug 1 Sonol will trot against her own best time at the horse fair opening in San Jose Cal on the 10th meeting. Owner Rott Bonner says she will try to beat 2 10 and if possible equal Maud 8 time of 2 08. Bonner believes she may beat her own mark but doubts Suus can match Maud 8.
Dr Worley of Williamsport treated multiple injuries in recent days after accidents near Fort Wayne. An eight year old boy fractured his skull after a horse kick. an elderly man lost four fingers in a binder gear. a girl fractured both arms from a cherry tree fall. another child suffered arm fractures from a wagon load of stone. a boy’s leg was crushed by a wagon. and a man’s arm was wounded by a foot adze. A fatal incident involved Mr Dixon, a respected husband and provider for a wife and two children, whose life insurance stood at one thousand dollars for each spouse.
Havernity July 31 Mamie Driscoll two year old daughter of Jeremiah and Margaret Driscoll vanished while playing beside an unlocked packing trunk. A crowd searched the house as her faint cries drew concern. The trunk was moved to reveal Mamie inside, unconscious from fright and trapped by a snapping lock.
Washington July 31 It is understood the senate will hear President Harrison name three cabinet officers to fill vacancies created by resignations of the secretary of war interior and attorney general The incumbents will retire before December first voluntarily to pursue other tenure The secretary of war resigns to join the senate and the interior and attorney general resign to become judges in the new circuit court of appeals Salary for judges is $6000 and life tenure Possible successors include Carter as interior secretary Cheney as war secretary and Taft as attorney general
Mirrorn reports that Frank Tammany, once believed drowned in the Ohio River after falling from a steamer, resurfaced alive. His wife had remarried, producing nine children with her second husband, eight of whom still live on the old farm. The story notes he swam to the Kentucky shore and was kindly treated.
In Sermon, Indiana, on July 31, Louis Dixon and a companion Moses Siefker swam White River at Rockford in heavy overalls. Dixon sank and vanished under the water, an alarm was raised but he did not surface, leaving rescuers to search the bottom.
Bayless W Hanna longtime Indiana Democrat and adviser to Thomas A Hendricks died suddenly at his Crawfordsville home at 5 PM yesterday His career included two unsuccessful bids for Congress and serving as envoy to the Argentine Republic under Grover Cleveland before resigning prior to Harrison's inauguration.

In Knight township Evansville Indiana two brothers named Stapp attacked farmer Ritter with pitch forks over a disputed farm line. Neighbors refuse to help and will not permit a machine on his farm unless he joins. All wheat nearby has been thrashed. he persists in refusal and has stacked his wheat.
A Lake Charles dispatch reports a deadly Sunday clash in Loskmoore where the so called Toda's gang attacked native workers known as the bell punchers. Fourteen killed and two missing. Whites and blacks described in a fierce melee. officers and doctors en route to the scene.
William Pepken of Presque Isle county Michigan confessed to being part of the assassination plot that killed Albert Moliter and a clerk named Sullivan in Rogers City sixteen years ago. He provided a written statement prompting arrests of twelve prominent county men, with the ringleader identified as a Rogers City merchant. The motive stemmed from jealousy and mob style conspiracy. Sullivan’s death was declared accidental and Moliter was the intended target. Most involved still reside in Presque Isle county. two are dead, others in Wayne county. All are to be arrested.
