Washington reports favorably on Edmunds bill for meat inspection for export and anti adulteration provisions. Senate passed the bill April 5 and reported without amendment amid a string of Senate and House actions on rail, customs, and public works.
Washington April 24 The district of Columbia grand master clears an earlier July edict against Cerneau Scottish Rite Masons over alleged fraternal ties with the Grand Orient of France. The reversal follows a supreme council proclamation asserting loyalty to Ancient Craft Masonry and withdrawing prior proposals and actions claimed to show fraternally with France inside U S jurisdictions.
In Fresno on April 26 Sarah Althea Terry, widow of David S. Terry, confronted administrator O. B. Sayle seeking funds, sparred with attorney Caldwell, was ejected from the office, then returned, smashed windows, and threatened to shoot Sayle.
In Sueneurn Ontario a farmer Monison drowned three of his children in a rain barrel and then attempted suicide, found critically injured by a creek. In San Augustine Texas Sim Garrett and Jerry Leel were lynched after escaping jail where they faced a poisoning charge against Col. John H. Brooks and family.
Judge Hilton begins steps to prosecute the New York World over offensive articles about him related to the Stewart property. The April 26 issue continues the series with claims that A T Stewart’s sister Mrs Hugh Skully was denied support and her children received only a pittance from the estate.

A massive fire at Unicorn Silk Manufacturing Co in Caresauqua Pennsylvania killed seven workers and injured several others. Volunteers delayed by hour, water supply issues, and a chemical explosion worsened destruction. Losses total about 110000 with building and machinery most affected. two rescuers remained missing as officials investigated cause likely spontaneous combustion.
In the first test of the compulsory education law here the circuit court found the truant officer guilty after he arrested a boy absent from school without leave. Judge Hughes instructed the jury that there was no alternative verdict.
Edward Aszman, condemned to hang for Bertha Ells murder, received a new trial from the supreme court after ruling the lower court failed to instruct on intoxication negating premeditation. He was very drunk when the crime occurred.
The surveying corps of the Pittsburg Akron and Western are laying out the new east and west trunk line through the city and county. The route passes the restless southern district and moves toward Weet Park before crossing the American Midland road about two miles west.
The people of Findlay are eager to secure a direct outlet to the east and will contribute their part toward achieving this goal.
A 75-year-old widower Matthias Burger and 60-plus widow Magdalena Cagg planned a strictly business marriage with Burger paying $1000. The ceremony was readied but the bride unexpectedly declined and left with a churchgoing friend. Other Indiana items include railroad vote results in Rochester and Newcastle, a Davenport area artesian well, and Wabash College athletics fund drive with captain-elect Shull and May games.
In St Pavuu on April 25 a servant girl named Almera Strottman, arriving from St Anna Minnesota, rented a room at Windsor hotel. Hallway gas jets were turned on and the door broken open revealed her dead body with flames extinguished. Another item notes Joseph Anderson, shot by George R K Buchan over his wife, died at a hospital and a dying statement will be used at Buchan’s murder trial.
George B. Ives ex-assistant district attorney was arrested in Savem Mass on forgery charges. The $820,000 alleged total includes $20,000 forged in names of Solomon Lincoln and B F Pabens. Banks holding papers include First National Salem $10,000 and Salem National Asiatic National and National Grand Marblehead. Ives reportedly used marital and trustee funds totaling about $67,000 for extravagant living.
The Juarez grand lottery drawing on April 23 in Juarez Mexico saw ticket 29999 win 60000 dollars with 45286 taking 10000 and 49681 securing 5000. In Laporte Indiana special elections to fund the New York Fort Wayne and Chicago railroad were defeated 167 to 92 in Cass township.
In Aurooxna Pennsylvania at 12 20 this morning Daniel Reittman thirty five formerly of Cleveland Ohio in a liquor fueled assault entered his wife’s sleeping apartment on Second avenue and fired several shots wounding her in the arm and shoulder and through the back before killing himself The wife is expected to recover The couple had been married about one year.
In Nasuvilly Tennessee on April 26 Governor Taylor ordered Taylor Guards and ammunition dispatched after Sheriff B H Boone warned of a mob ready to lynch two murder suspects held in jail. Telegrams indicate a risk of violence and a federal style posse was authorized. At Green River two suspects Bird Trenary and John Bidwell were arrested. In Manpison John A Carnagey was elected superintendent of Columbus public schools. In St Louis the Central Illinois Millers association backed the Butterworth anti option bill in Congress.

Furber were captured in Indiana after swindling Cincinnati Indianapolis and other towns with a $10 counterfeit bank note imitating the Germania National Bank of New Orleans issue. They were turned over to government officers. The Independent reports church vote results on revision of the confession of faith.
Of 170 presbyteries surveyed, 110 vote for revision, 55 oppose, and 5 abstain. Forty-four presbyteries remain unheard, shaping the overall outcome as results tally.

The long case of state versus C W Cook for operating a nickel in the slot cigar machine on Sunday at New Haven ended with a verdict of one dollar and costs. The judge delayed fines to about fifty dollars total. Marion Black, an accessory, was arraigned in the same proceeding. The Toledo Automatic Cigar Machine company may be involved in further action. Separately, a veteran colonel who aided Indiana volunteers and later moved to New Jersey is noted as deceased, with his wife surviving.
Representatives from Thalonian and Philalathean literary societies compete for a $25 gold prize. Finalists named Ernst Bierman and S. A. Shoemaker after a crowded program featuring orations titled Onward Archaeology of America The Teacher and His Preparation Woman and a Journal reading prompting applause. Fort Wayne financier J H Simonson of Rhinesmith and Simonson has been in South Carolina about ten days. A Fort Wayne syndicate reportedly plans to invest about 75000 in timber land near the Tugaloo river in Oconee county, with the intention of opening mills there. The land is described as a sacrifice and Rothschilds and others are said to be involved. more details are expected upon Simonson's return.
Colonel Hugh B Reed, a former Fort Wayne resident and Ohio native, died at his Somerville home on Friday. He studied at Ohio Medical College in 1841-42, worked in Cincinnati's drug trade, moved to Fort Wayne in 1845, and became a successful merchant. He actively supported the government from the start and was appointed by Governor Morton to a role in the Civil War era.
The city mourns as Judge W W Carson dies at his home at 95 East Berry Street after a long decline marked by paralysis threats and general debility. Born in Ireland, he immigrated to Canada, then the United States, rising from clerk to advocate, state senator, and finally judge of the thirty-eighth judicial court before retirement. Also noted are earlier obituaries and local notices, including Patsy Casen and other deaths, funeral plans, and a few community items.
Court notes show James Bolyard and Marion Mentzer charged with stealing hides from Matthias Funk. Jurors found Bolyard guilty of petit larceny but he was absent when judgment passed, bond of 300 dollars forfeited, search and warrant issued. Mentzer is also a Monroeville resident. Other items include Sam Brokaw trial date, estate administrator final report showing receipts 370.75 and disbursements 378.03, and various civil actions in Superior Court.
Friday the wife of David F. Comparet reached the sixty third mile stone and a surprise gathering was held at the Comparet home on Harmer street. Ladies joined at 3 pm then guests moved to the mansion for a three course supper. Guests listed include O. M. Comparet H. W. Matson T. J. Comparet W. H. Brooks M. Smith W. T. Davis N. Conover S. D. Melsheimer Hetrick G. R. B. Hench H. H. Barcus W. H. Root Charles Currier and others. Mrs Comparet received a costly fur.
Last week a committee chaired by Miss Millspaugh met at Westminster to prepare for the Christian Endeavor societies convention in this city on May 13. Delegates will come from Lagrange Steuben Noble Whitley Allen DeKalb Adams Wells Huntington Jay and Blackford counties. Rev J L Rondthaler of Indianapolis will speak. The aim is to extend the work as the city has five societies led by President BE Yarnelle, with state president W J Lewis, who says the state association will help cover some meeting costs.
Last week Walter Lyman married Carrie Yobst in Fort Wayne with a small circle of friends. The couple, residents of the city, will live at 98 West Superior after May 1. Also Silas VanHorn wed Fanny Firestine of St Joseph township. they plan to reside near New Haven in Adams township with many friends awaiting congratulations. The groom is a thriving young farmer with a ready home for his bride.
