Fire destroys the Southern Hotel in St Louis

A devastating blaze at the Southern Hotel in St Louis early this morning resulted in the likely deaths of forty to fifty guests and staff. Fire spread from a basement store room to upper floors within minutes, trapping workers and guests. heroic rescues saved many, including actresses Kate Claxton and Miss Handy, as firefighters fought the flames amid dense smoke and several jumpings from windows. The coroner and police plan a thorough inquiry into the fire’s cause and management, with a large list of survivors and the building’s owners and insurers identified.

Dozen in San Francisco Bull Rampage Tops City Streets

A wild bull, shipped from a ranch for San Quentin prisoners, escaped into the streets of San Francisco. It chased through Clay Street to Front and Broadway, tossing a lace shawl-wearing woman and numerous bystanders, until captured after a long, dangerous pursuit. The bull weighed about 1700 pounds, with the vaquero arrested for cattle in the streets.
