Government fails in test of rebate case in Philadelphia
In Philadelphia on April 3 a jury acquitted R D Wood & Co of accepting an unlawful rebate on 1 500 tons of iron pipe from Camden to Winnipeg. The government charged a 40 cent per hundred pounds rate with Great Northern railroad and that the refund was by Mutual Transit of Buffalo. The defense said Wood & Co acted as Camden iron firm agent and passed funds to that company. The judge challenged the government’s theory, and the verdict came in about twenty minutes.
