In Indianapolis amid a heated fight over patronage and the appointing power bill the governor remains firm. Democrats seek delay to gather votes while Republicans, allies, and factional chiefs maneuver. new sessions and charters in Evansville and Fort Wayne hint at broader state tensions.
Gov. McKinley will not resign and seeks to turn over every dollar of property to cover notes bearing his endorsement. The liability is expected to reach or exceed $100,000, leaving him and Mrs. McKinley nearly penniless. his wife’s $65,000 estate remains to be allocated.
