The Weather Wan Department indicates a weather shift starting 7 a.m. Wednesday December 9. Indiana forecasts show generally fair day conditions with east winds and slightly warmer temperatures in the northern portion.
Lumbermen of Tonawanda plan to elect delegates for a convention in Cincinnati on December 15 to press Congress for a moderate protective tariff on US lumber. M. M. Carr backs the McKinley tariff. John Edwards urges $2 per thousand feet on rough lumber and $3 to $4 on dressed. The Tonawanda group agrees a protective tariff is vital for the industry’s future. Big Thread Company absorbs mills and expands capital. Kansas board of trade calls for Cuban independence and war aid from Congress.
Washington December 7 Senate comments on the Cuban message are generally favorable with some opposition. Many senators excused opinions after not reading the full document while Brice praised the diplomacy. Tillman called the message common place and the last from that source. House members declined to express views. Call sought Cuban recognition in a pending resolution to adjourn.
Cleveland reports Ohio Guard plans to accompany President elect McKinley to Washington. Wealthy veterans and young cavalrymen raise funds for travel. Captain Perkins buys eighty black horses to train in winter. The party will travel in a two section special train with wives and families possibly including Governor Bushnell and staff.
William Sandeffer, a Black man, was shot dead in Evansville Indiana by a man named Welsher after a quarrel. The attack occurred as Sandeffer stood on a street. a revolver was fired into his chest and he died within ten minutes.
Reports say Antonio Maceo crossed the military line near the eastern Pinar del Rio area, with Maximo Gomez moving westward to join. Spanish authorities and Weyler hunt for the insurgent leaders as rumors place Maceo near Havana’s approach and suggest a potential approach to the capital.
Among papers a letter signed by M Gomez was found and the diary of Maceo recovered. Maj Cirnjeds arrived in Havana at noon with documents taken from the bodies of Antonio Maceo and Francisco Gomez.
The House moved swiftly to approve three measures including a pension bill and postal reforms. A private mailing card plan and fees for registered mail were outlined, while a 141 million dollar pension bill passed with little opposition. Senate adjourned to honor ex Speaker Crisp as Cuba discussion was noted for next week.
Neighbors discover Mrs. George Deacon aged 69 dead at a farm house near Plywocumm with her face battered by a stove poker. Police later locate George Deacon dead in a stock watering trough, believed to have killed his wife during a fit of dementia and drowned himself.
Havana reports Antonio Maceo, famed Cuban insurgent leader, killed in Hayans province near Mariel during the trocha passage. Also dead is Francisco Gomez son of Maximo Gomez. Spanish commander Maj Cirujeda details corpses found after reconnaissance, with clothing and jewelry matching the insurgent pair.
Rumors claim John Jacob Astor leads a syndicate aiming to buy the Ohio Southern railroad. A private telegram from last night denies any connection, stating Astor is not involved with the purchase or movement toward it. Cantox, Ohio reports McKinley busy with letters and visitors, while Col Herrick returns home and the Herricks travel between Cleveland and Mrs. McKinley.

In Leavenworth on December 8 Judge Gorse discharged Thomas Davenport and Charles and Anna Lambern who faced murder charges over J. F. Lambern's death. Detective Shaffer did not appear and the county attorney could not locate him. Separately Manila reports a massacre of insurgent prisoners at Cavite where sixty were killed in the streets after escape attempts.
