Benjamin F Keplinger, 15, 6 feet tall with 57 inch shoulders and 46 inch chest, 46 inch hips and 235 pounds, also willing to contest Crawford with a similar wager, proposed at the state line near College Corner in autumn.
Louis M Gottschalk a famed pianist died December 18 at Tijuca near Rio de Janeiro. A New Orleans native he went to Paris at age twelve, first performed publicly at sixteen, toured Europe, returned to the United States in 1853, and played in major cities including in South America. He composed pieces such as Apotheose Marche de Unite Chant de Soldat Bambouls Bannanier and Bango.

In Fayette County Indiana on Thursday evening a fire at Thom as Vansickle's residence killed his three children aged seven months two and four. Mrs Vansickle had left to visit her father when a neighbor found the children alone. the elder girl urged the neighbor to stay. Mr Vansickle entered twice to save the infant but was driven out by smoke. The three bodies were found under a bed after the fire. The tragedy left the community shocked as parents mourned in the aftermath.
Terre Haute Journal reports the death of Carlton A Goodwin a former city treasurer aged about thirty eight who shot himself in the stable after friends searched for him He left a wife several children and other relatives The inquest verdict attributed the act to financial troubles from city accounts as treasurer with a deficiency indicating severe distress in the days before the death.
