The somnambulist, J W Woods of Centerville Indiana, woke on the roof and was brought to his room via a ladder ascent amid cold and nerves. He usually avoids roofs but wandered in sleep, and it is unclear how he reached the roof last night.
A wily old black man in New Orleans devised a scheme to elude the police by hanging a yellow flag and claiming smallpox within the home. Weeks passed as officers hesitated, until one bold officer pushed in and found the trick. The culprit was caught, laughing at the ruse while admitting the risk and abandoning the flag.
The Boston Herald reports the Boylston Bank robbery left a newlywed with seven thousand dollars in bonds lost. The wife, a woman of sense, counseled courage and resilience, offering support as the couple faced hardship after the theft before their wedding tour plans.
Matilda McKinney, long known in Bloomfield as a social outcast, slept in a straw-stack after days of hardship. She started a fire in nearby woods to endure cold, fell asleep, and awoke to severe burns across her body. She was taken to the County Asylum for treatment but died Thursday evening after suffering in agony. About four thousand hogs were sold at the two pork houses in Lafayette last week.
