Dilts claimed various origins, gave a tour of disguise, and drifted from Paulding to Antwerp before returning. John G. Friend says Dilts is not of sound mind but offered charity last March. Dilts will be released when able to travel.
The Board of Public Works will meet tonight to decide the proposed pavement for West Jefferson street. The issue has lingered, brick contractors and asphalt supporters rally amid local owner backing. Residents hope to match the popular asphalt Washington street.
The Newport arrived in San Francisco from New York via Panama after 39 days, the fastest on record. Cabin boy George Cleveland died April 20 and was buried at sea. Five days later Captain Carver of the American ship Charles BR Flint, his wife and 31 crew were rescued in mid ocean after their kerosene cargo caught fire off Brazil.
Thomas Durnell, a Spy Run avenue worker at the electric light plant, received a 1000 volt shock from a dynamo while using a water hose. He was hurled ten feet and lay unconscious for twenty minutes before potential recovery. In a separate incident Nickel Plate inspector C C Vesselral was mangled after a switch engine strike, with Dr Dinnen amputating one leg and severe injuries to the other. He remains in serious condition but could recover.

Two toughs tried to pass counterfeit money on George Newkamm, owner of the Washington House, refused payment with tin quarters, then overwhelmed him and seized drinks. They fled Calhoun street as patrons resisted. Officers arrested Frank Kelly and John Frost after Newkamm’s identification, each held on two charges of malicious trespass and assault. Coin not found. Police notes report two drunks, Charles Steadley and James Ryan, jailed for fifteen and eleven days respectively.
The president pardons Todd M. Pettigrew of Wyoming serving five years for falsifying national bank books and Mike Warren of Arkansas serving six years for counterfeiting. Also reported are ship disaster casualties at Ushant and related notes on Mark Hanna’s campaign role.
Mrs Martha Reaser aged 26 died yesterday morning at her home on 275 West Washington Street from consumption. She leaves a husband Frank M. Reaser and two children. The funeral is set for 2 PM tomorrow at the residence. Pallbearers at the funeral of Mrs J W Fowles included Ad Link John Paine Will Tigar H C Schrader Chester Scarlett and Geo W Pixley. Will KF Dinnen had returned from Notre Dame.
The New York State McKinley League led by John Millholland traveled through Fort Wayne on the way home from St Louis. Seventeen New York delegates who voted for McKinley were honored guests on the special train. They wired ahead for a band to escort the delegation to Major McKinley’s home. Some wore badges reading No More Pratt in Qur’s. Also advertised are local sales and items at DALLAS F GREEN S and Dans F Gren.
