Chicago and Alton Train Robbed in Missouri This Morning

Kansas City dispatch reports a daring overnight robbery east of Independence Missouri on the Chicago and Alton line. The St Louis and Chicago express was held at gunpoint by three bandits who forced engineer and fireman aside as the small safe was opened and its contents taken. The robbers blew the big safe with dynamite and fled with thousands in money and valuables. Local authorities launched a hunt with deputies and detectives pursuing the trio.

Chicago man guilty of second degree murder in Ohio case

At Bowling Green today the jury found Robert Curry of Chicago guilty of murder in the second degree for his part in the Night Watchman Baker killing at North Baltimore in June. Judge Melhorn overruled motions for new trial and arrest of judgment and Curry was sentenced to life with hard labor in the Ohio penitentiary. Earlier John G. Jones alias Doc Lee was convicted and also sentenced to life for participation.

Claude Smith was arraigned this afternoon on murder charges in the case against George Frech. Smith pleaded not guilty and his lawyers sought an insanity defense for the January 4 trial. The judge remanded him to jail and prosecutors await testimony and further evidence as detectives continue building the case.
