The Boston Store advertises discounts on ladies waists to 19 and 39 cents, Charlies at 3 cents, organdies at 6 1/4 cents, and dimities at 8 cents. It notes summer undergarments at cost, new fall dress goods, Canton flannels, and cotton wool blankets at low prices, urging customers to shop where prices are always lowest.
The Columbus racetrack saw Robert J drive to victory in all four heats of the pace, with Frank Agan and Rubenstein runner ups. Time records fell as 2:033 in heat one, 2:0414 in heat two, and a 2:0234 final heat, drawing a huge crowd despite stormy skies and heavy betting.
Interest in the Du Pont world championship tournament at Burnside Illinois continues. Cleveland August 7 An estate suit before Judge White concerns Captain Albert Meswald who commanded the Wycoken when it sank off Long Point near Erie. His wife and 15 crew members died. Meswald left a modest estate with no will or children. The case examines heirs and distribution under Ohio law.
Thomas B. Reed was renominated by acclamation by the Republican convention of Maine’s First district. The crowd cheered as Reed thanked the delegation for the unanimous nomination and pledged support for McKinley and Hobart while backing Llewellyn Powers for governor. The convention endorsed the St Louis platform and pledged loyal district support to Reed’s election.
London Aug 7 The House of Lords debated the Irish land bill during the committee stage with a large gathering of peers. Viscount Templetown's amendment to determine each holding class and set fair rent based on landlord improvements was defeated as the government rejected the amendment to avoid burdening land commissioners. The amendment was finally adopted by 127 to 67 amid cheers, with support from the Marquis of Londonderry Earl of Mayo Earl of Winchel Earl of Abercorn and others.
Moses Allen a colored farmhand on George Hardin’s Butler county farm near Rochester was killed when a Holstein bull broke a nose ring and pinned him. The 2,000 pound animal then trampled him multiple times. the bull had previously killed two keepers. The owner had the bull shot after the tragedy.
A Rio Janeiro telegram states that Sir Thomas A Ribeiro Ferreira reports Britain will recognize Brazilian sovereignty over Trinidad. Britain had seized the island in 1895 for a cable station, claiming Brazilian sovereignty lapsed due to nonoccupation.
A gang of 50 hobos is encamped a half mile west of Logansport in a grove with springs. Farmers complain of depredations to gardens and henneries as the rovers plan a long stay. Twenty rovers sought food at the Northern Indiana Hospital for the Insane. Fires burn nightly as they roast corn and stolen poultry.
Stark City mine remains under constant guard after unrest at Alum Cave. Sheriff Mills and a deputy oversee patrols day and night led by J. H. Willis. Two thirds of workers are armed and firearms are selling well in local hardware stores. Indianapolis convention to discuss the Nicholson bill and a mass saloonkeepers meeting is planned for Sept 17–18.
In Greenwood Indiana on August 7 Elsie Vandegriff of Franklin suffered a severe arm injury while operating a road scraper on the Indianapolis and Greenwood electric railway right of way. The right arm was badly mashed and broken with muscles severed above the wrist risking permanent disability.

A blaze in the composing room of The Farm printing office at Squettsville, Indiana, destroyed one wing of the building. The steam press and engine in another section were unharmed. Loss is estimated at 1500 dollars with no insurance.
Valparaiso Ind Aug 7 Isaac Zane a Chesterton farmer was stung on the arm by a house fly that fed on a dog’s putrid flesh. The arm swelled to four times its normal size and doctors say it must be amputated to save his life.
AnptRoN Ind Aug 7 At a federation gathering it was reported that President Prescott of the International Typographical Union agreed to be the orator for Labor Day here where the state celebration will occur.
Philip Kettle, a farmer living south of Braz, Indiana, was instantly killed yesterday when a log wagon rolled onto him. The wagon carried a heavy load of logs and the accident resulted in severe body mutilation.

The Connersville Epworth League session selected Rushville for 1897 and elected W F Freeman president. A tramp, presumably John Edline the Vincennes murderer, is in custody at Percy, Illinois, using the name John E Douglass of Ohio. The Moores Hill Epworth League district conference at Vevay drew 140 delegates with welcomes from local church representatives.
In Indianapolis on August 7 Representatives of the sound money faction within the Democratic party attend the provisional national committee meeting. More than two thirds of states are represented with many spectators ready to back a sound money candidate. Debate touches on another national convention likely to be held in this city. States represented include Alabama California Connecticut Florida Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska New Hampshire North Carolina New York Ohio Oregon Pennsylvania South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin.
In Fulton Missouri yesterday a 38-year-old man fell into a 40-foot well. Mrs Henry Harris climbed down with a rope, reached the water, and pulled the child to the surface. The boy revived after rescue and both women endured fainting spells but recovered quickly.

The Hoover family reunion was held near Millville in Henry county Hester County Aug 7. A permanent organization was formed with Lee Hoover of Richmond as president and Mrs Mary Hoover of Spiceland as secretary.
Fire at the Trenton Fireclay and Porcelain company works yesterday afternoon destroyed buildings. Loss is estimated at 150,000. One fireman named Charles Wood was killed by falling walls and several others injured.
Washington August 7 A O Moore a colored messenger in the treasury department resigned his position yesterday saying he would not serve under a Democrat who bolted the ticket.
In Catoaco on August 7 during a heavy rainstorm Scott a 27 year old rider of the IdaIe and Scott firm on Uslumet avenue was instantly killed while cycling home.
Thomas E Watson opened his vice presidential bid in Atlanta addressing 3000 in a Moody revival shed. He urged a nonpartisan hearing and pledged to champion the plowman, the hoe wielder, and the hammer wielder while detailing People's party reforms. He traced his break with the Democrats and his Alliance platform pledge, arguing farmers across regions must unite.
In St Louis a record heat spell pushes the temperature to 92 by late morning with no breeze. The city morgue lists eight dead and 31 prostrations as Missouri and surrounding states report extreme conditions threatening crops and ice shortages.
In Washington county near Weiser canyon Boise reports the death of John Lane's five year old daughter after her twin brother mishandled a pistol. The bullet struck the girl through the body and she died shortly after.

TELEGRAPA BREVITIES report the American ship Santa Clara arriving in San Francisco yesterday morning after a 172 day voyage from New York with general merchandise. The St. Louis from Southampton was sighted south of Fire Island at 10 a.m., setting a faster voyage record than the St. Paul by over two hours.
In Fort Wayne, Mrs Luella May Derbyshire through Breen and Morris filed for divorce from physician Samuel Justin Derbyshire in superior court. The complaint papers were withdrawn from the clerk’s office. Also, Sarah P Knox declared unsound minded became violent and was jailed. Fred Strove lists four cases pending against Strouse woman in jail. Nichole LeSeno fined five dollars for obstructing a sidewalk. Nicholes Rowe on trial for maintaining a nuisance.
Nancy Fristow, aged 104, died in Wichita yesterday. Born in Tennessee as a slave of George Washington Murray, she held a marriage certificate from 1815 given by her master to wed Thomas Murray. She left behind twelve children, eighty four grandchildren, forty five great grandchildren and forty three great great grandchildren.
Postoffice in Osnaburg Stark county Ohio burglarized last night. Stamps valued at 137 dollars stolen after the safe was blown open with gunpowder and carried into a church. Police indicate about six men were implicated.
At Campbell's Grove Baptist Sunday school picnic Fort Scorr Kas August 7 about twenty five persons were seriously poisoned by ice cream or tainted spring water. Symptoms identical in all cases. Doctors attended the sufferers and all were sent home last night. Some victims feared to die.
SAN Francisco, Aug 7. John Sopher, a laborer, shot his wife Frankie after she refused to return, wounding her seriously. She had left him due to his brutality. Sopher then fatally wounded himself.
William James Kelland, a young Seattle railroad mechanic, shot himself in Los Angeles in the coroner's presence. Grief over his suspected lover Jennie Snyder and fear of criminal prosecution preceded the act. Snyder had left her family for Kelland and arrived last month. she died last Wednesday from injuries tied to Kelland's involvement.
Miss Callie Schwartz and Miss Lizzie Kressler left for Toledo this morning. F A Reichelderfer, son of the county recorder, bought a residence on Lake avenue. Seattle August 7 Gen Russell A Alger and partners win a court ruling reversing a Interior Department order. Federal Judge Hanford awards title to a vast tract of timber land in western Oregon to Alger Hawley and Diller in the action against Secretary Smith.
