Masked Robbers Strike Banks and Exchanges in West

Across Paducah Kentucky and Illinois on April 24 masked robbers seized a telephone exchange in Bandana Ballard County forcing Assistant Cashier B H Hahs to open the bank vault stealing over 3600 dollars. They bound the victims and escaped leaving no trace. A separate incident in Pinckneyville saw a grocery safe blown and 1500 dollars taken. In Montana bandits failed to halt a train near Welch spur after concealed shooters fired at the engine.

English Losses Grow in Frontier Skirmish at Bimla

In Bimla India on April 24 British forces fought tribal and Afghan allied attackers along the northern frontier. Sixty Englishmen were killed or wounded in a fierce engagement aimed at disrupting the line of communication of the English force. Native casualties not yet reported.

Arbor Day Observances In City Schools

Public schools observed Arbor Day with appropriate exercises and seed distributions. Seeds have mostly been planted by pupils and the aim to encourage tree planting is noted, though no young forests are expected to grow from the observance trees.

Grover Cleveland Reported Better After Illness

Mr Cleveland of Lakewood New Jersey is listed in stable condition after suffering rheumatic gout and acute indigestion. Doctors say there is no danger of any critical development in the former president's illness as of this report.

Arthur Miles Loose From Jail After December Release

Arthur Miles was released today from jail where he had been held since December 7 on a surety of the peace. His wife had him arrested, he beat her, and he could not obtain bond. She demanded release only if he would stay under court control and kept away from her. He was released on his own recognizance. Mary M. Spreer sues William for divorce alleging excess drinking and brutal treatment including making her tend bar and clean the bar. She seeks divorce and $1,500 alimony. Sentence suspended for Lawrence Wynang, who pled guilty to petit larceny after six months in jail, given a 60-day sentence suspended on good behavior. Harriet Blair’s $6,000 damages suit in circuit court dismissed after partial evidence. city not notified within 60 days of injury as required. Marriage licenses issued to Frederick Hisner and Ana Quandt. Charles W. Klinefeter and Alice L. Kiefer. Court notes include Freese & Gale v. S. R. Owensboro Banks Suspended Deposits In Reorganization

Owensboro Savings Bank and Trust and Davies County Bank and Trust suspend deposits and cash payments due to poor collections. Owensboro bank is led by president James H. Parrish, with $200,000 capitalization and over $1,000,000 in deposits, while Davies County bank is led by president T B Anderson, with $50,000 capitalization and over $700,000 in deposits.

Horse Fails in Street Car Crossing Delay Traffic

Hundreds of men offered advice as a horse hitched to a railroad car bus stepped into street car tracks at the transfer corner. The ladder truck from the Central engine house halted nearby as onlookers warned the driver. The horse was freed with a crowbar after its foreleg was sprained. Traffic backed up about ten minutes.

PURRINGTONS PLEA ACCUSED MAN SAYS POLICE BLUFFED HIM

Thomas L. Purrington was brought before Judge O Rourke on burglary and grand larceny charges after pleading guilty to grand larceny. He claimed innocence, saying officers coerced the plea with a threat of ten years. The judge ordered a withdrawal of the plea and set the case for next Monday’s trial. he had been caught after a hat was taken from Hanna Street and a hat found at the Dygert store.
