Special to the News from Indianapolis April 1 with Jomiinson Hall full of cheering thousands and flags. State Chairman James P. Goodrich calls the Republican state convention to order shortly after 2 oclock as delegates crowd in for the day. Delegate activity and campaign chatter fill the Claypool hotel as overstreet Beveridge Hemenway and Hanly address the gathering before tomorrow's formal business.
A Fountain county Republican delegation confronted Governor Hanly at his office regarding his opposition to nominating Fre mont Goodwine as lieutenant governor. The exchange was heated with both sides trading sharp remarks as Goodwine supporters pressed the governor.
Reports claim an open split between Charles W. Miller and William S. Taylor over delegate allocation to the Indiana state convention. Miller supporters deny coordinated plans to boost Miller, while Taylor delegates allege attempts to shift Vigo county delegates away from Watson.

A Lakeside committee representing about 100 property owners seeks board approval to rebuild and strengthen the Lakeside dike to guard against floods. The board has no funds or clear legal status yet and will study the plan, while residents of nearby areas anticipate similar requests if Lakeside proceeds.
Jeff Davis appeared in police court claiming he was attacked in broad daylight and believes the incident was an assassination attempt. The hearing focused on the allegations and possible witnesses.
In Jattle Rock Arkansas on April 1 friends of U S Senator Jeff Davis crowded the police court as he faces a charge of carrying a revolver with murderous intent after a street fight that left him with facial injuries and a long-barreled pistol. Deputy prosecutor Thomas Helm also faces assault charges and the cane given by the legislature may be returned to Davis. Helm claims he will keep the cane and is unsure if he struck the senator. the incident followed a street dispute that drew deputies and onlookers.
Senator Davis was fined 25 for disturbing the peace after a confrontation with Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Helm. Witnesses testified Davis rushed to his offices with a revolver, claimed he was defending himself, and vowed to shoot Helm. Davis announced an appeal and the station faced heightened tension as witnesses described the assault and threats.
The Northern Indiana M E church conference in First Church Anderson opened with devotional services led by Wallace W Martin. Bishop Berry presided as the conference began with registration and organization. Dr John P. D. John spoke on A Glimpse of Godwin the Microscope.
Pittsburg April 1 Judge Youns of the U S court discharged the receivers of the Westinghouse Machine company after approving a petition. The firm holds $3,000,050 in orders for turbines engines and boilers with $800,000 cash on hand. Westinghouse Lamp and Westinghouse Motorcycle interests have earlier been freed. Rehabilitation of the Westinghouse Motor and Manufacturing line is progressing on track and creditors expect a reorganizing plan soon.
A violent riot broke out in Philadelphia near the site of Mammerstein's new opera house as about 3000 unemployed men gathered for work. Police retook the streets after repeated charges, with several seriously hurt, including Dominic Mignolin whose head was badly crushed.
Levi Safford of Winthrop Harbor, ill in McAlister hospital, seeks a federal supreme court ruling on sixty acres in Harlem valued over 20 million. Hetty Green has offered a million cash for his interest, while President Roosevelt is also named as a potential heir. The long legal battle has persisted through lower courts to the U S Supreme Court.
Secretary Taft departed Washington for a western swing with stops in Columbus Chicago Omaha Council Bluffs Cincinnati and Louisville. He will address local clubs and associations and attend banquets and luncheons along the route before returning to Washington.
