Reports from Rome and Paris describe a major Italian front battle with Austrians massing sixty divisions along the Brenta and Piave fronts. Italian artillery and counterattacks are holding and inflicting losses as lines shift, and officials express confidence while warning the struggle may last days.
A Chicago medical convention announced a new physical standard to be used to reexamine all men with sight or mobility disabilities. The standard tightens requirements and delays some classifications, with many physicians receiving the booklet. Local boards expect a draft expansion to 200000 men to be affected by the policy change.
Associated Press dispatch reports Premier Radoslavov asked to resign as King Ferdinand accepted the cabinet's apologies. Ministers to remain until a new cabinet can be formed. Dissatisfaction grows over postwar territorial claims and the handling of the dobroja.
Washington June 17 casualty lists from the War Department report ninety six names, including nine Indiana soldiers with two from Fort Wayne. Private William A Roe of Fort Wayne severely wounded. Private Lisyd A Long also of Fort Wayne killed in action. Private Paul A Winehall of Laporte dead of disease. Private Dewey Brewer of Indianapolis severely wounded. Other entries list officers and further casualties by status, with multiple private names and locations such as Brooklyn New York and Hartford Connecticut among the listed dead and missing.
The Sunday casualty list from Washington tallies six killed in action thirteen died of wounds sixteen wounded severely and one officer, Lt W. Stark of Brooklyn, severely wounded. Names include John H. Barnes of St Paul Indiana, Clarence J Cowgin of Elwood, George H. Foster of Fairmont, Lloyd A. Loox of Fort Wayne, John W. Vogel of Tell City, and John F. Miliez of Michigan City.
Paris reports French troops advanced north and northwest of Halle Brays between the Oise and the Aisne in an Osu operation, seizing about one hundred prisoners and several machine guns. German counterattacks were repulsed in Cavieres wood and the Vosges. little other action reported. Clemenceau visited the front briefly and reportedly smiled when not discussing the situation. London notes a French raid east of Arras yielding prisoners, while Haig confirms raids near Givenchy and north of Albert with limited enemy bombardment. Berlin dispatches Emperor William praising crown prince for major battlefield gains, citing eighty five thousand prisoners and heavy defeats of enemy reserves.
The Fort Wayne man William A. Roe is listed among today’s wounded. Aged forty, Roe enlisted in May 1917, sailed for France in October, and served in Company A of the Twenty eighth infantry. He was severely wounded May 23 in action and his family at 434 East Leith Street has been notified. Roe was married with eight children and worked at Pioneer coal yards.
Mrs Busch widow of the St Louis brewer planned to sail to the United States. She traveled from Germany via Spain and arrived on the Spanish steamer Alfonso XIII. Reporters were restricted and one was briefly arrested upon boarding. Authorities, including the mayor, indicated high sensitivity around her travel and security.
Washington report from United Press says Provost Marshal General Crowder will propose widening the WWI style draft to include men over 31. Following talks with Secretary Baker, Crowder explained the draft situation to congressional military committees. Baker supports extending draft age limits. legislation may appear as an amendment to the army appropriation bill. Senate military subcommittee approved the agguage provision authorizing the president to certify draft-age men who are fit and equipped.
President Wilson pushes a fifty million dollar emergency fund in the sundry civil appropriation bill for the coming year. The House voted the amount after trimming the current-year allotment from one hundred million. The president’s letter to the appropriations committee details spending on foot and fuel, the War Trade Board, War Labor Board, Public Information, secret service, and other war agencies, praising the committee and noting a remaining unexpended balance of about 26.8 million.
Washington June 17 Submarine chaser plans move forward as Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt pushes a hybrid 200 foot Eagle destroyer styled craft to counter coastal U boat raids. He urges testing several quick to build varieties, including 121 foot wooden hulls with cheaper propulsion, alongside the destroyer program.
Amsterdam dispatch reports from the Wolff Bureau that American war prisoners in Germany are not abused or displayed for public spectacle. The telegram says prisoners are not subjected to stones or insults, maintaining a calm German public demeanor. It notes no shortage of food in the camps and describes existing conditions for captured U.S. servicemen.
Paul Frank Baer of Fort Wayne, called an ace by his mother Airs. Erema Baer Dyer, is reported as a prisoner in Germany. The War Department telegram dated May 22 says he was captured and held in an unidentified prison camp, with family to be notified when location is determined. No injury indicated and he was believed missing since May 27.
The rural drive for war savings stamps and certificates begins this morning in county country districts under Postmaster Ed C Miller county campaign chairman. Men in the deferred classes canvass districts urging every person to subscribe. Meetings planned for Harlan and Leo feature programs and a friendly rivalry grows among workers to raise sales as communities rally for the war effort.
For Fort Wayne and region expect afternoon or tonight likely thunderstorms then cooler and Tuesday fair. Indiana forecast shows possible thunder showers this afternoon cooler, pleasant day thereafter. Ohio valley and Tennessee look generally fair with normal temperatures for the week and a record high around 100 in Evansville St Louis and Kansas City yesterday.

Amsterdam June 1. Emperor William replies to congratulatory telegram on his accession anniversary. He praises Prussian militarism and his people as the most capable on earth, vows strength to endure suffering, and calls the army invincible. Telegram notes world events since his accession and thanks the sender.
London reports that the arrival of American troops in recent days eclipses all prior efforts. The Post calls the feat unmatched in mercantile annals, noting weekend scenes at an army post as extraordinary.
The city council chamber is leading the registration of German alien women with Chief Abbott in charge. About seventy five women appeared on the first day, and volunteers assist with a growing force of helpers. An estimated six to eight hundred German women in the city may register before the June 26 deadline to avoid penalties.
United Press reports that under government control railroads were reorganized into a pooling system. All railroad car equipment becomes common property and per car freight charges between lines are abolished. The move standardizes usage and reduces interline transfer costs.
A boatload of survivors was seen by observers in Lewes Delaware as a naval intelligence crew barred access to the victims. Details on the ship involved or exact survivor count were not released by officials.
General Pershing reported heavy German losses on the left of the American line in the Woevre region with several prisoners taken, including an officer. Attacks near Chateau-Thierry were broken up, artillery active, and Mont Didier Neyon fronts watched for further action as American forces repelled a large German assault at Xivray with heavy enemy casualties and 8 prisoners taken.
Two hundred eight Fort Wayne boys will leave Wednesday noon June 26 for Camp Sherman Chillicothe Ohio. Entrainment at noon and train leaves promptly at 12 10. The revised list of entrained men includes many changes due to the petition for exemption of married men with children married since June 3 1917. Fort Wayne draftees listed with addresses across the city and nearby areas.
Trial of John O Leary for riding his brother Jeremiah to evade New York federal court continues. Jeremiah O Leary, charged with treason and draft obstruction, was captured near Portland on a Washington state chicken ranch border raid. Federal agents guard the case as proceedings proceed in New York.
Washington reports America will provide troop support for Italy as Austrian forces press. Presidents Wilson and Baker pledge forces will join Italians and allies to show backing, though numbers will be limited. Reassuring Italian morale cites strong Italian and British resistance as British, French, and soon American support inspires renewed confidence.
