Veterans Picnic Set by Western Chicago Division News
Over 250 members of the western and Chicago division veterans association of the Pennsylvania railroad will attend the annual conference at Valparaiso Saturday October 1. A special train will operate from here to Valparaiso with a luncheon and a city tour planned. A business meeting of officers and retirees will be held at 5 p m with a toastmaster to be named and talks by prominent members. The event promotes 100 new eligibles for the organization.

Pension Pays Rail Workers on Pennsylvania Line
The Pennsylvania railroad paid 1 854 092.03 in pension allowances to retired employees in the first six months of 1921. During January through June 1921, 387 retirees died, producing a net increase in pensioners and raising the total on the Roll of Honor to 406. The average life term among these men is about 40 years, and their average age on the Roll is 73 years and 1 month. Since the pension department began on January 1, 1900, the railroad has funded pensions entirely from its treasury. By June 4, 1921, 4 882 former employees had been placed on the Roll of Honor, of whom 7,476 have died. Officers and employees retiring at 70 receive pensions, as do those aged 66 to 69 who have completed service. Pension amounts are based on years of service at 1 percent of the average regular monthly pay for the preceding 12 months, with a minimum of 15 dollars per month. For example, a worker with 40 years of service and 10 years at a given monthly salary would have pension at 4 times the monthly rate. Acceptance of a pension does not deny continued employment opportunities, but tenure in the Pennsylvanian system influences pension eligibility. The board of officers, led by President, and the pension department, under W. Atterbury and other vice presidents, oversee the system.
