At Annapolis on October 18 the Naval Academy and Lehigh played to a 5 15 tie after a disputed finish. A Farbaugh opened with a 400 yard run for Lehigh in the first half. Belknap missed a field goal as Lehigh claimed none touched the ball during the late rally. Whiting recovered a fumbled ball for a tying touchdown before thegame paused by Dr Dashiel amid mounting tension.
Georgetown University defeated the Virginia Military Institute in a strikingly fast and clean football exhibition. Georgetown won 33 to 0 as Columbia handed Hamilton College a 35 to 0 loss in New York, with Columbia displaying strong line play and solid defense.
Carlisle Indians, faster and more determined, defeated Cornell 15 to 5 at Percy field. Cornell backfield was crippled, substitutes struggled, and Carlisle exploited interference and quick plays to score twice before halftime. Brewster punted well in the second half as Cornell's offense stalled.
Fort Wayne Wolff eleven defeated Huntington City team on Huntington grounds in a hard fought contest before a large crowd. The Wolffs led 12 to 0 at halftime with touchdowns by Henderson and Link and added a late score by Spateh in the first period. Fort Wayne dominance and stout defense sealed the victory in a game noted for its intensity and crowd interest.
Port Wayne High school football battled Huntington High in a scoreless tie as both teams opened their seasons. Fort Wayne moved the ball late but time ended play as Hamilton opened holes and Wilson turned the corners for gains. Fumbles at key moments doomed Port Wayne’s potential win.
In Crawfordsville Franklin and Wabash met this afternoon with the Baptists taking the game 22 to 6 after Wabash fumbled hard at key moments. Washington University beat Rose Polytechnic 32 to 100 in St Louis, outclassing them in weight and play.
Goshen High school football team, claimed state champions, defeated the Howe Military team of Lima in Goshen Indiana this afternoon. Three hundred spectators saw the University of Michigan beat Notre Dame 22 to 19 at Armory Park in Toledo on a soft, slippery field.
The game featured strong team play and rapid backs plus ends, with Michigan outpacing Notre Dame in speed and execution. Notre Dame, despite hard effort and disciplined defense, faced a more trained opponent as the Hoosiers fought for a hard won result.
Bloomington, Ind. Indiana beat DePauw 46 to 5 in a hard fought game. Coble appeared for DePauw as the largest man on the gridiron, weighing about 20 pounds more than his opponent.
In Vincennes Indiana on October 18 Isaac Conoway aged 76 and Mr Hathaway aged 63 wed. Conoway is a former soldier drawing a $72 monthly pension and had recently been divorced from his wife.
A Baltimore dispatch to the Tribune reports Rev. L Sternberg of Urbana Indiana arrived from Germany aboard the Frankford. Customs officers searched him taking a watch and chain some spoons and trinkets associated with him. The items belonged to Mrs Charles Eglatt of Wichita Indiana who also traveled as passenger. A quantity of gloves and fancy goods were seized as part of the bustship. The minister claimed innocence.
The Rev. Mr. Sternberg wept as he witnessed the collector seize all the woody material at the custom house, while it was noted that he was aware of the law he was violating.
The Rev. 1 Sternberg, pastor of the German Evangelical church in Urbana, came to Wabash three years ago from near Lafayette. He sailed from East Prussia ten years ago and left Urbana four months ago due to poor health. He is a guardsman aged man with a family who did not accompany him. In a letter he said he would fail for home Oct 2.
