A long list from Washington reports American expeditionary forces with numerous soldiers killed in action wounded in action and died of disease. Washington Nov 16 telegraphers wages were raised by order of Director General Mc Adoo. Rates rise to 13 cents per hour above prior pay with no minimum of 48 cents. retroactive to October 1. Eight hour day to be standard, overtime paid at time and a half. About 60,000 to 70,000 workers affected including telegraphers and switchboard operators.
The order applies to all road agents not telegraphers and follows a partial fulfillment of the telegraphers’ union aims. It provides for a half way measure on overtime to shorten long hours, addressing complaints about extended shifts in telegraph service.
