Elkins Dies at 71. Traction Magnate and Financier
William L. Elkins, a multi million dollar traction magnate and financier, died at his Ashbourne summer home near Philadelphia at seventy one. He narrowly escaped an earlier death when a hoisting girder near Broad and Chestnut streets struck close to him, contributing to his later illness. Elkins helped develop street railways with P A B Widener and financed art through a $5000 prize at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He was born near Wheeling West Virginia and held memberships in numerous societies and clubs.
