Sunday saw demonstrations and tense marches as negotiators pursued peace amid fears of clashes with van owners and police. The Chicago Federation of Labor accused the Employers' Association of aiming to crush union labor, while authorities searched for a stable populace to calm the streets.
CHICAGO April 20 The Chicago Federation of Labor and the Employers Association face a protracted conflict as teamsters and capital interests clash over deliveries and the strike. Mayor Dunne and a five member peace commission attempt to broker a settlement while Roosevelt’s visit to Chicago on May 8 looms. The city endures daily disruption with furniture moves and increased wagon traffic as both sides dig in. President Roosevelt may be approached for aid should negotiations fail.
Dallas jury heard a dramatic murder trial as Celeste Wood’s death was linked to a domestic dispute. A dog collar poison and crystal toxins were allegedly used, with frogs used to test effects. the jurors viewed the evidence before delivering a verdict and potential death penalty consideration.
James Larimore Philippine War veteran dies of tuberculosis at 42. He served in 1898 and lived in Adams county and Shebosgan. Survived by mother, stepfather W B Groy, two brothers Albert and Banker, sister Mrs Mary Wasg and others. Funeral services set for Tuesday at River chapel.
Caracas dispatch reports American Minister Herbert W. Bowen has been recalled to Washington and will depart Caracas likely Monday. Bowen asked Washington for explanations concerning charges he made against Assistant Secretary of State Loomis, his predecessor as American minister in Caracas.
In Indiana two drowning incidents are reported. A boat capsized on the Wabash River near Tlavayette on April 30, witnessed from shore by a brother, and the body of Bilis Bry seaman was recovered. In North Vernon the body of Victor Sapes, missing since yesterday afternoon, was found about 10 feet below the surface near the Gab.
Henry J. Meyer a prominent stockholder in a mine linked to a recent diamond find is described as a wealthy and admired figure. Danby, a show promoter, notes Meyer's global business, South African connections, and a growing stake in Pretoria mine shares whose value has surged. Meyer reportedly married a South African woman Wiss Walker and recently welcomed a child.
Report from Hope and St. Joseph hospitals details two young victims of Tuesday night’s tragedy. Miss Metching shows improving sleep but remains anxious with periods of restlessness and fear of her attacker. John Welker rests fitfully, with pain, blood loss, and limited alertness. doctors note a fair chance of recovery despite critical condition.
A collision on the Dayton and Muncie line near Greenville, Indiana, killed Pred Hughes and Miss Mary Yeaney, both under twenty, and left others injured. All involved were from Union City, Indiana.
Judge D R Best of Angola attends court with attorney D M Link and court reporter Wil Wilther of Anburn arriving in Fort Wayne. They registered at the New Ageline. Best gave a speech nominating Ville Carver for congress at the Tepah Ucan district convention last year, while Link serves as Democratic chairman of Dekalb county.
April 20 reports Robert Browlk aged 28 crushed between a protection post and wharf boat while watching Island Queen land at Tad. The accident occurred in Lawrenceburg as the vessel approached the shore.
A man and his wife were found with fatal head wounds at their home in Alexandia. Both died within a short time after the pistol blast. Neighbors report the husband likely shot his wife before turning the weapon on himself. Six children were away from home at the time.
Edna Wells drove thirty miles at midnight to Grabill to recover her four year old daughter taken by the father four weeks earlier. With Sheriff Grice’s aid and Judge O Rourke, Wells secured a habeas corpus and confronted the husband’s sister, Swift, to reclaim the child. The reunion occurred at Grabill. the mother and child then returned to Fort Wayne, while Wells’s estranged husband remained behind.
The St Paul Globe, a Democratic morning paper, announces suspension after thirty years. Editors say offers to buy were refused and the paper was not adequately patronized by advertisers. The masthead will be offered for public sale.
In Wilburton Oklahoma a gas explosion at Missouri Kansas and Texas Coal Company Mine Number 18 entombed thirteen miners. Foreman William Ray and several workers attempted to rescue them as heavy timbers and dirt blocked the shaft. Air pumps and ventilation efforts continued with grim odds, and officials feared all are dead. Names include B F Stainer Mike Wynn Ralph Fisher Ben Smith William Atkinson O Golden J Moreno Gus Phillips Knox Lynch Byrd Mike Duvall Alf Gales William Edwards and others.
Mrs Lene Redelsheimer aged eighty three, longtime Mort Wayne resident born in Germany in 1844, died suddenly Sunday evening after dinner at her daughter’s home on Berry Street. Stricken with heart trouble she had enjoyed family company, but collapsed around supper time and died at 9:30 PM. She left seven children and many descendants. husband Siegmund Redelsheimer preceded or followed in the family line, with roots in Port Wayne and local Jewish community ties.
New York April 30 Justice Davis rules against Congressman Towns in a peculiar suit brought by William Hearst to recover 6000 dollars from a promissory note dated February 36 1904. Hearst claimed Towns refused payment while Towns says funds were advance for writings for Hearst publications. Judgment awarded to Hearst in a brief ruling with limited defenses.
John L. Griffiths, newly named United States consul at Liverpool, sails from New York after a stop in Washington to report to the State Department before continuing to his post. His wife will join him in New York for the voyage.
