Evans' Shells at Magdalena Bay and the Target Range
The piece describes naval artillery practice at Magdalena Bay with ships firing on canvas targets in rough seas. It details gun crews loading, aiming, and firing, how shells create water geysers on impact, and the roles of observers, range-firing procedures, and scoring. It notes four target ranges laid out and the record-keeping for the exercises conducted April 18 to 20 with a plan for trophy awards.
