Miners Push Toward Wage Scale at Indiana Convention
In Indianapolis on March 16 the United Mine Workers convention debated the scale committee report. It was accepted with amendments rejected by decisive votes, with 125 seven sections to be discussed tomorrow before adjournment. President Mitchell, Vice President Lewis, Secretary Wilson, and Scale Committee Chair Walker defended the report. Efforts for a minimum index wage scale for outside and inside labor, biennial settlements, and quick rehabilitation of the Interstate agreement drew little enthusiasm. Miners plan to present the current wage scale to operators in districts not reaching agreement while allowing individual signings with executive board consent. Indiana operators will meet miners in joint talks on March 24.
