The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ begin a ten day retreat at St Josephs hospital with Rev William Gelsdorf directing. The retreat precedes the semi annual novitiate reception and vows ceremony on August 8 led by Rt Rev Bishop Herman Joseph Alerding. Local and visiting sisters attend through the first and second halves of the retreat.
An important meeting of the local joint executive board including Bartenders Local 305 Cooks and Waiters Brewery Workers and Beer Drivers will convene this afternoon at 1 o'clock in Hartenders hall to transact special business for the organization.
Capps and Hurley take key roles on the Shipping Board with long naval and construction service. The record notes Capps’ years at Brooklyn navy yard 1869 to 1882 and 1892 to 89, staff work with Admiral Dewey, leadership of Brooklyn yard construction, and 1913 appointment by President Wilson to the London International Maritime Conference. Hurley, replacing William Denman, is described as a Wilson era find and a prosperous manufacturer and stockholder.

Fort Wayne Red Cross headquarters saw a busy turnout with knitting rooms filled and eight new memberships at West Berry street. Mrs. H Brooke Sale leads a new knitting program for uniforms and garments for service members while Mrs. J A Remmel directs instructions at Unity Hall. A Chicago appeal urges rapid aid with large quantities of pajamas socks wraps bathrobes bed shirts and towels to support hospitals and supply bases.
