Fort Wayne’s Early Streets and Landmark Traders
The narrative recalls Fort Wayne in 1823 as a growing trade center with Barr Street and Columbia Streets forming the core. John T. Barr and John McCorkle forged land deals after rafting down the Ayam river, selling land at $1.05 an acre that would later host major businesses. Early councils funded marsh drainage along Calhoun and adjacent streets, plotting 110 lots with Calhoun Clinton Barr Superior Columbia Main Berry and Wayne avenues. The square between Berry Clinton Calhoun was set aside for public use. Barr returned to Baltimore, while McCorkle and Barr’s legacies shaped the city though they did not settle there.
