July 24 Washington reports only minor variations found between the draft numbers sent to local boards and the Army’s compiled list. The discrepancies are listed below with no major changes to classifications or eligibility.
Fire started at midnight in the Atlantic Refining plant in Philadelphia, destroying ten stills and four hundred thousand gallons of gasoline, then spreading to explode twelve more stills and two naphtha tanks. Nine men were injured as flames threatened surrounding property. total loss estimated at 350,000 dollars. Fort Wayne Overland Company advertises rebuilding sale with low prices.
Frank G. Rice, seven years of age, well known in this section, died midnigh t at his daughter Mrs Amos home in Eel River township. The report notes the boy’s death occurred at the residence in Churubusco Indiana and mentions a local family connection.
The building formerly home to Hamilton Bank and Dukes Clothing Store is purchased by Citizens Trust Company. Banking rooms on the corner will be remodeled for trust operations. Forty feet on Calhoun Street and upper floors are for rent and will be finished to suit tenants. Applications solicited.

Kosciusko county officials award the Starner road cement project in Plain Township to Hutman Harrison Construction of North Vernon for 44 700, just under the 44 757 estimate. The single bid covers a three mile cement road in Leese.
In an officers training camp in France American soldiers adapt to grenade throwing with lessons once used in baseball. Instructors praise accuracy and progress as French troops watch and learn, predicting Americans may become top bombers on the Western Front.
Auburn Ind July 24 County DeKalb conscription board member Mountz was relieved after a telegram said a conscriptable must not serve. Mountz aged 21 or more lacked the required age, replaced by W A Austin joined by Frank Baltz and Dr J G Souder. A separate note from a local incident mentions Robert Loop, six, injured when he fell from a bicycle, no fractures found by physicians.
Deceased was born in Ohio on June 16, 1847 and was a son of Ar and Mrs. Lawrence Rice. In 1882 he married Ellen Harter who died several years ago. Surviving are three sons Charles Rice of Oretor, Cleveland Ice of Bettle Creek Mich.
The funeral is set for Friday at 3 PM from Pleasant Bill Dunkerd church with Rev Jess Gump of North Manchester officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview cemetery in Hun tarton.
