The General Electric plant in our area plans layoffs in the near future due to canceled orders. TH A Karnes said the exact number is not yet determined, while Walter Gail expected no near recovery. Over recent weeks more than two hundred employees have been laid off or left.
Local Wayne district baseball notes report Logansport defeated Wayne unit 7 to 6 after leading by four entering the seventh inning. Loganport piled up six runs in that frame while Wayne rallied but fell short. Wayne pitcher struck out several opponents as Logansport advances to Illinois Grand division honors.
Industrial Girls' Clubs in the city resume activity with a YWCA federation meeting at Krueger-Wallace farm next Wednesday evening. G I and Dudlo trucks will transport members from the YWCA after work. Reports from the Dewey Lake conference will be given by three girls. Three picnics are planned for the week. Dudlo Tassies plan an outing at the park Saturday. The Azada club will picnic at Stoners Mill Sunday after work. Home telco girls anticipate a Sunday outing. A large turnout is expected. Freight train No 88 is to be reinstated on the Wabash mill road to restore next-morning delivery for the town. 350 miles of Port Wayne.
Officials expect the Kurt Wayne Tolling Mills to resume operations within the next two weeks. If orders are not enqueued by Monday, the plant may stay closed until July 18, with work expected to restart for several days during the week of July TR.

While wheat and tobacco yields are down from last year, corn acreage is larger than last year in most key producing states. Thomas N. Hughes, 84, Civil War veteran of the 40th Iowa, longtime resident of a rural district, died Monday at his daughter’s home in South Whitl. Surviving are daughters Mrs. JoN. Miller and Mrs. Mannie Campbell and Mrs. Dingshes’ family. Also noted is John Hunt, who recently moved from Indianapolis, dying at home after six years of illness, with five brothers and two sisters surviving the mother, Mrs. Rie Hunt.
