In Cleveland four men spent the Fourth at Tippecanoe Lake and set a local angling record, catching bass up to six and three quarter pounds. If anglers want to sustain Mele exploits they should hurry the rad and real.
Fred Stuhr returned to Fort Wayne after visiting friends in Ligonier. Davenvort Thomas arrived from Warsaw to stay with Grace Graham. Harry Freyberg spent time in Goshen with relatives. Mrs. Van Smith came back from Elkhart after a pleasant visit. Miss Bessig Mirker returned home from Elkhart. Albert Bouse of South Bend visits his parents. Fred Vondersmith of South Bend stays with his parents. Miss Mildred Goldsmith hosted a picnic at her Main street home. Hal Blue and Ben Goldstein from Goshen visited Reta Jackson and Margaret Bouse at Wawasee lake. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Wutchinson entertained at a Martin street dinner with rooms decorated in national colors and red roses. Guests included Martha and Grace Thompson, Ruby Solomon, Stella Baum, Mabel Adee. Mamie Loeser hosted friends at the Oscar Cook show Friday evening with Ruby Solomon, Wattle Loeser, Zona Kringer, Edith Ochs, Mrs. Chas. Green, Mabel Adee.
In Columbia City Indiana on July 5 the Commercial Club’s new board elected officers for one year. President L. K. Strong, vice president I. Peabody, secretary A. S. Nowels, treasurer H. B. Clugston. Five member executive committee includes the president and secretary plus Benjamin Rauiter C Schuman and Mose Afelbaum. Strong will file articles of incorporation with the secretary of state. Regular monthly meeting location to be decided.
A Kendallville pair eloped and wed at a friend’s Kalamazoo home, 434 Michigan Avenue, on Monday evening. Miss Elizabeth Mathews and Wilber Rupp returned to Kendallville Tuesday and receive congratulations. The bride works as a saleslady at Campbell & Co. The groom is Frederick Rupp’s son and works with his father at the Kendallville Bugsy company factory.
In Kendallville Ind on May 5 a cottage owned by Dr W A Moyer on Lake Gage was struck by lightning during a storm. Mrs Moyer suffered a severe electrical shock and remained unconscious for several hours. Her daughter Mrs Horse Birition was thrown to the floor but not seriously injured. The cottage furniture was dislodged but the structure and Mrs Moyer later improved.
A damaged notice touts Dr Leonardts Hom Trop cure as infallible promising to eradicate piles. It claims a Nebraska trial, asserts nationwide distribution from Meyer Bros Co and the Dr Leonardt Co of Niagara Walls NX, and offers a $100 guarantee for any case.
In Kendallville Indiana on July 5 a refined ceremony at 504 West Mitchell street joined Miss Catharina Sebutt of Kendallville and Mr Clark Odorn of Elkhart. Rev Charles E White officiated before about twenty five guests. The bride wore traveling dress and Mr and Mrs Odorn left at 9 20 for Elkhart to begin married life. The Franks home was festooned with roses and ferns and many handsome gifts were received by the couple.
Speary Niles, fourteen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orson Niles, was badly hurt while using a small cannon during Independence Day celebrations in Ligonier Indiana. A faulty fuse caused the explosion wounding his scalp and blowing powder into his face. Dr. Black attended him and he is recovering, though the injury will linger.
At Auburn Indiana July 3 county commissioners have not resolved the dispute over the Matson Lateral to the Cedar Creek ditch. Contractors and farmers clash over delays and alleged mismanagement while J W Pearl holds the contract and bids low.
Gib Curtis won the walking race at Butler on the Fourth. He covered three quarters of a mile in six minutes and ten seconds to claim the $10 prize.
Infant ALMON died in Albion area after illness. funeral held at home. MeNair family note another infant was buried Wednesday. Jacob Linsey, Noble County assessor, injured finger firing a roman candle. A Warrow resident died, affecting the county auditor’s family. Alban Nines to play Fort Wayne Tagles at Albion baseball park Sunday. Funeral of Deputy County Auditor Frank Shook’s infant child reported. Mrs Shook improving.
Auburn Ind July Auditor Shook reports the state board of equalization will meet at Indianapolis on July 28 to review assessments on DeKalb county farm lands city and town lots and personal property.
July 6 report from Kendallville notes not many accidents on the Fourth but several young Americans were injured. Ralph Whitford linked to a harsh fate. A July 5 item mentions clerks and a premature discharge, with an organization forming a large cracker as a local feature.
Merchants push for evening closing on Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday with most signatories. A few holdout, with Shamrocks mentioned. Bluffton beats Shamrocks 2 to 1 in eleven innings as 400 fans cheer. Bull pulled in the ninth but not a discredit. Shamrocks boast hitters and face Decaturites next. Portland’s Genie Hunt team beat Bluffton four of five this season. League Park hosts tomorrow’s game.
South Bend posted the lowest Fourth of July receipts in the Central League at 972.16 while Terre Haute led with 1555.00. Overall league receipts totaled 4914.10, down 1509 from Memorial Day figures due to counter attractions. Each team received 1415. The figures cited include Springfield 1510.5, Canton 1020.90, and South Bend 972.16.
Richmond defeated Decatur in a fourteen inning marathon in Richmond Indiana. Final score Commonwealth with Geer and Winger pitching for Richmond and Jessup catching for Decatur as the game stretched into extra innings before a tie could be broken.
