Hog Island Yard Costs Defended Before Senate Panel

Washington February 12 heavy government spending on Hog Island shipyard near Philadelphia was defended by George J Baldwin chair of the American International Shipbuilding Company before the Senate investigating committee He said the plant will build fifty two ships this year and that one keel was laid today despite transportation and other difficulties The company originally sought six percent profit on cost but General Goethals reduced it to 3 3 percent and the government may rent or purchase the yard after the war The expected cost rose from about 21 million and construction in war time was deemed more expensive than peacetime obligations.
