Paterson Fire Rips Through City Center Leaving Thousands Homeless

A massive Paterson fire destroyed much of the business and residential districts from Broadway to Van Houten and Market streets. Authorities estimated losses around 7.5 to 10 million dollars as Governor Murphy and Mayor Hinglife directed relief, security, and curfews. Dozens were burned or injured while hundreds fled amid embers and downed wires.

Military tents and blankets sent to Paterson for relief

Quartermaster General Donnelly announced in Trenton that a large supply of tents blankets and camp equipment was dispatched from the city to Paterson to aid in relieving hardships caused by flooding. Orders from the adjutant general called out the Paterson National Guard battalion for patrol duty and potential emergency support under Colonel Camphall of the First Regiment.

Children Perish in Fire at New York Residence

Jennie and Bisiy Merninger children of Dr. R. Berlinger died of suffocation during a blaze at their top floor room. Fire broke out in a connected room blocking access, and despite efforts to reach them, the bodies were found near the door after the flames were extinguished.
