In Shirley Indiana a long running Kentucky feud culminated when Absend Hicks killed Gerar Martin in a saloon. Hicks fired four shots as Martin sat at a card table, killing him within minutes. Hicks fled and is reported surrounded by a posse in Jackson township. The feud history notes ties to past conflicts and slavery-era enmity.
