Huntington officials and church leaders discussed coal conservation after mayoral and ministerial meetings. C B Williams urged ministers to emphasize saving coal and possibly cut weekly meeting counts. Huntington faces a coal shortage as big churches require heavy fuel to stay warm.

In Pittsburgh on December 17 Count von Bernstorff former German ambassador to the United States had his honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Pittsburgh stricken from the lists by the trustees. The 1912 charter day ceremony had awarded him the degree along with six other Germans whose names were also ordered removed.

In Wabash Indiana December 17 farmers of Waltz town ship and Richland township held a large meeting after Somerset town suspended all business to host the county short course. J W Schwab opened the sessions with talks on farming topics and Mrs Gerhard spoke for the women on Planning Liberty Meals.
Sailors from ships sunk by German warships in the North sea say fire was opened at a range of 3,500 yards. Within a half hour the British armed ships except the Pelew were sunk. Crews from steamers in the convoy saved many sailors landed on Norway's west coast. Ninety nine of the rescued were British.
Kendallville faces fuel restrictions as federal orders limit coal to individuals and curb duplicate purchases while a new Kendalville Handle Manufacturing company prepares to start in a former onion storage building with initial employment planned. Community notices include obituaries, a school operetta fundraiser, and local transfers.

Senator Swanson introduced amendments to remove private claims adjustments on naval reserve number two in California, triggering attacks by Senator King on bureaucratic methods and cruel treatment of prospectors. Minority Leader Gallinger opposed the leasing plan, while Senator Phelan said he would support it. Moose Hall hosts Frank E. Jaynes tonight. members may invite friends and the public is invited.
The Army announced promotions on December 17. George H H Cameron Andrew W Brewster Charles C Ballon George Weed Charles Fl Muir and Charles Z Mencher were promoted to major generals. Colonels Malvern Hill Barnard William Hay and Jesse McCarter were made brigadier generals. Colonel Alexander L Dede was promoted to brigadier general of the signal corps.
Lieutenant James M. Barrett writes home from France where he serves major of his battalion in the 20th United States Infantry. He earned his shoulder straps at Fort Benjamin Harrison during officers training and sailed in September.
