Narrow escape as engineer slips into concrete pit

Charles Bass, engineer on the Baltimore and Ohio line, leaped from his engine into a nine foot concrete lined pit filled with cinders. The surface looked solid but he escaped as water and steam caused a perilous moment. Rescue crews arrived but he managed to climb out before disaster.

Fort Wayne Boys Join U S Aviation Corps

Fort Wayne youths enlist at the U S aviation corps recruiting station. Ray Hardendorf of 1528 North Calhoun Street and Earl V. Gaskill of 1422 Boone Street prepare to enter the aviation corps. An aviation group also forms at the General Electric plant amid lunch at Hof Brau.

Ample steel supply assured for war needs

Washington December 10. Representatives of the nation’s largest steel mills assured the War Industries Board that steel supplies are adequate for all war needs. They proposed centralized ordering under J L Rep Logle to speed deliveries, with price adjustments to follow production-cost data from the Federal Trade Commission. The steel men will confer with the Trade Commission on December 14.

Oyster Supper for Enlisted Fireman Honors LaMaster

Despite four fire alarms and a frozen chemical engine delay, an oyster supper for No 1 station firefighters in honor of Joseph K. LaMaster proceeded at 1100 PM. Chief Hilbrecht and Assistant Chief Liehthut attended, with 120 lantern slides of past fire scenes shown, including LaMaster on duty at Pulley works and on a Mazing residence rooftop.
