War department pushes new registration to draft 14 million men. Congress may extend limits to include ages 18 to 20 and 32 to 45, expanding the pool to ensure enough volunteers for future training camps and possible deployment. Officials urge swift action and broad public cooperation.
A Fort Wayne based Governing Body of Deferred Class Men organized a central league to support war work. The group led by President Hamilton Navonat includes Robert C. Smith of the Pennsylvania company and Mills of Tri-State Loan and Trust. It plans to act as needed to win the war and offers to cooperate with the county council of defense. Fort Wayne precincts and over five hundred members are represented.
The German plotter Robert Fay, arrested in Spain, had served a short term before escaping with a water prisoner from Atlantis Georgia federal penitentiary. Fay, who came to the United States from Rotterdam in 1915 under a false name, drew public notice after a 1945 arrest near Grant Wood North Island on suspicion of plotting to destroy munitions ships. Indicted, he pleaded guilty but allegedly agreed to testify for the state, later not doing so, taking blame to shield others. He claimed to have deserted the German army and fought with the French, and after conviction sent a letter to President Wilson requesting deportation to Germany, which was refused.
