Chicago returns show Governor Charles S. Deneen leading in Cook County by about 4,800 votes while state results outside Chicago favor former Governor Richard Yates. Republicans vote totals in Cook reach 127,610 with Yates 61,142 and Deneen 66,368. Stevenson appears set for the Democratic nomination. Foss leads Hopkins for Senate endorsement with Chicago support but state results unclear. Ohio's Potential Senatorial Tangle
Cleveland Ohio Aug 8 Ever since Foraker and Taft battled for the Ohio presidential vote the senatorial scene has been complex. The Taft canvass exposed a division within the party between Foraker and Dick and other friends. With Taft victorious it is stated Foraker would retire. Foraker and Dick have long acted in harmony, but their rivalry now entangles the field. If Foraker retires and a northern Ohio senator is chosen, northern Ohio would hold two seats until 1911 while southern Ohio would have none. Letters from southern Ohio leaders propose giving the vacated seat to that section, or backing Charles P Taft for the place, to be followed by a Taft backed northern pick in 1911. Herrick or Burton likely to succeed Foraker. the question is whether northern and southern Ohio should share both seats. If Taft gains one seat this year and another in 1911, the split would favor Taft. Burton and Herrick would wait for Dick's term to end. Dick and Foraker have not been asked for views.
